1218.0. "wanted: mechanic who makes house calls" by IMOKAY::cummings (Paul T. Cummings LTN2) Thu May 11 1995 19:25

Does anyone know a mechanic who makes house calls?

I have an alpha stern drive that is connected to a 260hp mercruiser.
It was fine when I took it out last winter but now I can't get it into
reverse. The boat is on blocks and relatively non-mobile. I have it
schedule to be transported to the sea on May 27. My worst case is to
have it brought to a mechanic I know on that date but I'd dearly love
to have it fixed so I can use on mem day w/e.

I'm leary of removing stern drives myself. I suspect the gear or
cable just got stuck over the winter.

N.E. Power and Marine wouldn't take it. The suggested a fellow named
J.P. Robinson from action (Mobile Marine) but they couldn't give me a
phone number and I can't find him. Anyone know who he is?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

I heard of a guy in Grafton from another boater who raved about his
    skills and prices.

I think the name was Bob's Mobile Marine in Grafton MA.

I never had a need to find his phone number. If you find him please
post his phone number. Grafton is in the Worcester phone directory.

    Good luck, Mark

I found the mechanic. He is from Boxborough not Action. He will be
doing the repair in the next couple of days.

Thanks for the help.

I'll post results after the job is done.

Repair report:

The follow is J.P. Robinson from Mobile Marine of Boxborough.

He did the job in about 45 minutes, plus 1.5 hrs travel, plus 40$ in
parts (cable, seal kits - list price I'm sure) for $165. His rate is
50$/hr for repairs or travel.

The problem was the inner part of the shift cable (i.e. the actual
cable as opposed to the cable system including outer core) was jammed
up with various types of gunk and corrosion.

I called him on Friday and he showed up on Saturday (in the rain!).
He seemed knowledgeable. He was professional and courteous. I think
the price was very reasonable. He lubed the whole thing and checked
the alignment.

I haven't had the boat in the water yet so I can't testify to the
integrity of the water seals but I don't have any reason to doubt it.

He also does hauling for 50$/hr. He bought a fancy new trailer and is
very interested in this business.

I plan to use him whenever I have a problem. He'll travel to your
boat - you pay for travel time. I'd recommend him.

(I don't have the phone # but he can be reached by information in
Boxborough MA.)
