1215.1 | Depends | SALEM::BLUFIS::ABRAMS | Tue May 02 1995 15:34 | 14
The insurance will depend on your uses. If you use the boat in fresh water you probably will not need tow insurance, but if you use your boat in the ocean and travel long distances off shore it mignt be a good idea. I know the cost to be towed from 15 miles out can be very costly (like $400) and tow insurance might be a good idea if your boat is not new or only has one engine. George (joy iii)
1215.2 | beginners shouldn't be too far from help... | UNIFIX::FRENCH | Bill French 381-1859 | Tue May 02 1995 17:04 | 12 |
I would suggest that the sort of boating that someone new to baoting should be doing would minimize the need for towing insurence. That's not to suggest that beginners don't get into trouble, they certainly do - a lot more than the experienced and prudent boater, but a prudent beginner should be close enough to help to not be bankrupted if they get into trouble. As the previous noter observed, if you are on fresh water, you should be able to affors the tow. That's certainly true on Winnipesaukee. Bill
1215.3 | Boat U.S. includes some towing as part of membership | IMOKAY::cummings | Paul T. Cummings LTN2 | Thu May 04 1995 14:03 | 9 |
It might be worth noting that membership in Boat/U.S. comes with some level of towing insurance. I think you get 100$ included and can buy more at a reasonable rate when you register. I have 150$. I forget the cost but I remember I thought it was quite reasonable. They also include a directory of "qualified" towers. Their # is 703-461-2866. In 7 years of using my own boat primarily in the ocean. I haven't needed it. |
