1203.0. "12' Boat -- Aluminum, Plastic or Fiberglass" by UNIVSE::VILCANS () Tue Dec 20 1994 17:33

    [Subj: Small Boat....Aluminum, Fiberglass, Plastic or Wood]

    		I need a small boat for a 4 HP Merc for use at a pond.
    I'd like to use it both for rowing and motoring, and just a fun boat
    that my six year old can grow into over the years. I wanted plastic or
    fiberglass to withstand abuse, but the only 12' boats around seem to be
    in aluminum. Southbridge boat house in Concord sells a nice 12' aluminum
    jon boat, but I'd like to hear some suggestions on Plastic or
    Fiberglass alternatives before I pull the trigger. What type and where
    would really help....

    							Thanks,
    							=Paul=

1203.2crawdad's are they still available?NCMAIL::GEIBELLlost in PennsylvaniaWed Dec 21 1994 09:0613

        A good boat for the $ that fits into your wants is the coleman
    crawdad, its made of abs plastic, rated for up to 5 hp, weigh ~125 lbs
    very stable, and alot of room for a boat thats 12 feet.

       I owned a crawdad while I lived in NH. had a 3hp motor on it and
    that was more than enough motor for it. I bought it at rich's
    department store for 299.99. since the wife cant swim that choice was
    much better than a canoe.

    Paul,

             IMHO Jon boats are to unstable and even worse when a youngster
    is in the boat. I would opt for something wide and added freeboard
    height.

    I agree with .3. For fishing a crawdad or jon is great, but for a kid
    to learn to 'drive', a semi-V would be much safer IMHO.

    FYI, there is a used crawdad for sale in Shirley, Ma. I know
    nothing about it, except it's chained to a tree in someones front
    yard. It's right on Rt 2A, about 1 mile east of the Bull Run
    Resturant. Can't miss it, the guy's yard is like a large field.

    I've had a 12 ft alluminum boat handed down to me. My dad got it new in
    1959...it's a v-hull made by mirro-craft...

    It doesn't leak...it's been thru hell...it's not tippy...and now my
    son is using it....

    I recommend you buy a quality 12 foot v-hull....(thickness of the
    alluminum) and you'll have a great little boat that will be around
    a long time.....

    Good-Luck

    Rick
