1196.0. "Leaking I/O" by NITMOI::WOOD () Mon Oct 03 1994 13:44

    My 1987 OMC cobra, 175HP IO has developed a leak around the
    intermediate housing. I cant seem to pinpoint exactly where as
    the water just kind of streams in at a somewhat slow rate, but
    fast enough so it sprays around and water is dripping from the general
    area of the transom/outdrive. Has anyone had this happen before?
    It seems like a solid metal piece where the shaft passes through
    from the outdrive to the flywheel. I suspect the shift cable???
    Does this move through a gasket of some kind when raising and lowering
    the outdrive? Trimming up and down changed the rate of the leak.

    I don't know anything about OMC, but if this were a
    MercLoser, it would almost certainly be the driveshaft
    boot -- the flexible rubber tube that seals between
    the intermediate housing and the outdrive.

    If you tilt the outdrive all the way up, and fondle the
    boot, you may well be able to find a rip.

    Not hard to replace, but you have to remove the outdrive
    to do it.

    	If you have power steering, the cooling unit is behind
    	the motor near the top leftside.

    	I once had a pin hole leak....

    Mike,
    Did it leak while running or at rest?
1196.4Yes- When the engine is runningALLVAX::ONEILLWed Oct 19 1994 12:4319

    	It leaked when the engine is running.

    	The power steering cooler is inline with the raw water input
    	hose that goes to the engine. So while the engine is running
    	water travels through the power steering cooler on route to the
    	engine.

    	During winterization, the water must be drained from the cooling
    	unit.

    	The pin hole rupture, and the engine compartment started to fill
    	with water, luck I was only 50 feet from shore.

    	Took the unit off and had it fixed....

    	Has been working fine for the last several years.
