1186.0. "Shifter Problem" by KAOFS::N_BAXTER (we'll see who rusts first...) Thu Aug 18 1994 17:31

Folks;

I'm looking for a couple of "heads up" suggestions before taking a cable
apart.

I have been having some intermittent trouble while shifting from forward or
neutral to reverse on my Mercruiser (sp) 5.7 litre with an Alpha 1 drive.

Symptoms

Sometime it is "slow" going into reverse gear (gear grinding).

3 out of 10 times it stalls going from forward to reverse (this is a
real pain in the butt when docking in a 20 Km wind).

Recommendations so far

My dealer focused on the cable between the shift mechanism and the
drive. He mentioned that he has seen a number of cables where electrolysis
(I'm hooked up to shore power during the week) has built up a deposit in the
cable, and this cause friction. He told me to disconnect the cable from the
shifter, and fire as much WD40 into the cable as possible. The idea is to
wash out the deposit.

I asked him about the cable set up mentioned in the "dealer prep"
book. He didn't fell that an adjustment was needed, rather a cleaning or
replacement of the cable.

Concern

I would like to clean the cable out myself (read cheap Scot). I
haven't seen a breakdown of the cable. What is going to happen when the cable
is disconnected from the shift mechanism? How is the cable terminated?

Replies appreciated.......

1186.1Borrow a cable luberMCS873::KALINOWSKIFri Aug 19 1994 09:385
Why disconnect it? Find a friend who is into motorcycles. Ask to
borrow their cable luber. It is a fancy metal and rubber clamp you
attach to either end of the cable and then use a can of either cable
lube or wd-40 to lube the entire cable. just hold down that spray can
button until lube comes out the other end of the cable.

The shift cable should not be lubricated according to mercury.
The buildup of junk actually occurs inside the shifter block
which is on the sterndrive end of the cable.
The drive must be removed in order to clean it out

Sorry for the terrible graphics but basicaly you have an aluminum
block about 4" long with the center bored out, this is where the
debris builds up and .affects reverse shifting only because the
block is being pulled over the cable sheath at this time.
Flood it with wd40 put shifter in reverse and the block should
be FLUSH with the bushing on the stern drive, if not i have
had sucess by smacking the block with a block of wood and watch
    the junk fly out.

The cable could alse be stretched which is common, if so you must
replace it and perform adjustments according to the manual.
Cable cost about $30 and is not a hard job.

Remember the drive must be removed.

    Good luck Pat...

    Loretta,

Isn't a shame when your shifter doesn't work (or requires lubrication).
All of Stittsville will know when I post it at Bradley's. Now thats'
