I need some technical help on substituting some type of alternative device to replace the voltage regulator on my 1966 80hp Johnson outboard motor. The ammeter shows negative (about -4 amps) when the motor is running and after testing the regulator (by shorting it out) the amps were at max. According to the manual this condition indicated a faulty voltage regulator. Because of the age of the motor, a new or used regulator is just about impossible to find ( already called Whitney's). Would some other year model regulator work effectively? Would there be some alternative to the regulator? - someone mentioned diodes may work. The motor has rectifier diodes on it but these are to change AC to DC and don't regulate voltage. Any info please respond or call at DTN 237-2474. Thanks, Steve

1181.1 | TRY FAIRWINDS MARINA FOR OLD O.B. EXACT MATCH PARTT | POWDML::TARRASKY | Wed Aug 10 1994 16:24 | 11
Why don't you call one of the many O.B. Part Houses who specialize in old parts, both new & used, such as in Florida, and get the exact part? The only outfit that comes to mind quickly, with an 800 number down in Annapois, is FAIRWINDS Marina 800-378-7436. They UPS used parts, new old parts, the same day the order is received, internationally (it really still is a very large worldwide market). GOOD LUCK! REGARDS, Mike
