1158.0. "Offshore race moved from Newburyport to Winnie" by DELNI::BIRO () Mon Mar 07 1994 15:27

There will be no Newburyport offshore races this year. Due to APBA, Northshore
Offshore, other sanctioned boat racers associations fighting over the purse
strings, Newburyport is no more. The good news is there will be a sanctioned
boat race for offshore type boats at lake winnie on June 4th. (this was
to accomodate Memorial weekend, roundie-roundie car races and bikers weekend.
I am not sure of the sponsors, I do known Irwin Marine was instrumental in
getting the race. The race course will be held in the "broads" for all of
those who known the lake. I will post more when I get the info.

I liked watching the race and the boats really looked great. I don't think I'll
miss it much; since it really messed up te fishing for a week or so.

1158.2Awesome news....for some ;-)CAPL::LANDRY_DWarbirds 1939-1945Tue Mar 08 1994 12:0720
	RE: .0

	Thanks.

	This is good news for those of us who enjoy fishing.

	I was "fortunate" enough to be all done fishing an all niter on
	Fri and heading back in Sat am when a couple a those wanna be
	jet jocks came zipping outta the mouth trashing fishing for
	the rest of the week. All fishing was offshore for a while :-(

	-< Tuna Tail >-

	PS: As much as I dislike them around prime fishing area's
	    I think there kinda neat to watch......with earmuff's ;^)

	PSPS: But as you may notice from my personal name I'd rather
	      see those twin Allison engines on a P-38 or for those
	      who like to take a risk one of them on a P-51 ;^)

1158.3Any updates on the APBA race? (time,location,?)SALEM::WHYNOTMalibu SkierFri Jun 03 1994 10:2510
    Any updates on the race scheduled for this weekend? i.e. Where would a
    good vantage point be, on or off the water? (some mountaintop perhaps
    :^) Is this going to be taped for ESPN or PRIME?

    I saw "Shooters" 40' cat being towed up rt 93 yesterday being followed
    by the tractor/trailer" support vehicle. Nice lookin' rigs.

    Doug_too many committments this weekend, but maybe a spectator on
         Sunday.

1158.4To answer my own question...SALEM::WHYNOTMalibu SkierFri Jun 03 1994 13:008
    The race, I was told by Irwin's Marine, will take place on Saturday
    from 12:00 to 1:30. The course will be from the tip of Rattlesnake
    Island toward Wolfboro and then turn back towards Rattlesnake. So,
    I guess a good vantage point might be along the shore between Alton
    and Wolfboro, on the penninsula near Wolfboro airport, or perhaps one
    of the mountaintops (Mount Major perhaps with bino's?).

    Doug_probably won't make it...
1158.5Brief report from the sceneSKIBUM::GASSMANTue Jun 07 1994 16:578
    The race was great! I was on the east side of the course, before the
    third turn. It was fun to watch the big boats cream the smaller ones
    into the turn, then lose it all during the turn. The copter show was
    almost as good - as they were filming the leaders and it looked like
    they were racing. The weather couldn't have been better. I hope this
    becomes a yearly event - but perhaps not too many times per year.

1158.6Agree - the Helcopter was as good as boatsSEND::STORMWed Jun 08 1994 12:198
    I was there too, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd never seen a boat
    go 130 mph before. I also agree with Bill that the helicopter
    show was almost as good at the boats. I guess the ESPN helicopter
    would get within 20' of the boats. Having seen the race now, I'd
    love to have seen some of the ESPN footage.

    You folks are all right! the Offshore races were a real rush. We were
    in a 38' Fountain just to the right of the starting line. Boy when
    those boats came by you could feel the pounding in your chest! Watching
    the Cats setup for the turns was really something. They would come down
    on the throttle, setup for the turn, pick a slot and then go for it....

    I hope it happens next year too!!!!

1158.8So, when's it gonna be on the tee-vee??SALEM::WHYNOTMalibu SkierMon Jun 13 1994 11:574
    Does anyone know when this will be televised?
    Anyway we could find out??
