Since we have decided to squander the college tuition money, I have
been researching the new boat market. It seems everyone has a
different fiberglass lay up technique, and while I understand the
differences in principle, WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE.
Some manufacturers swear they don't even own a chop gun, yet Sea Ray,
Cruisers Inc., Grady White all use them to prevent print through in
the gelcoat. Do I really care if its bi-axial, triaxial,
multidirectional cloth or whatever they are claiming is best today?
What about coring, is end grain balsa better than mat, or should I try
to go with the high tech divinycell(sp?)?
I am looking for a good quality boat that will last 10 years or more. I
know you get what you pay for, I'd just like to be sure I want/need what
I'm paying for. If anyone can shed some light on the quality impact for
the average boater of the different techniques, I would appreciate it.
Thanks
Paul

There have been two pretty good articles in the last two Trailer Boat
magazines by Ken Hankinson about fiberglass construction. The articles
explain the different methods very well and when each is appropriate to
use. If you can't find them, drop me a line and I'll see if I still
have mine.

I don't think all your questions can be answered to any degree
here. A book on the subject might be better. I don't have any
particular titles to recommend. I would however suggest your local library.
Any modern book on boat construction should get into the various types
of material. It really is rather involved.
