1151.0. ""Brake" on linkage??" by RCOCER::FRASCH () Tue Feb 08 1994 09:26

I saw and advertisement in "Boating" for Morse Controls, which I have, that said
something about a "Brake" adjustment on the cable.

One control lever falls off at most throttle settings so I have to hold it in
place. This is a real bummer when I'm on a trip for any length of time.

Does anyone know about the "brake" function? Can I adjust this to hold the
throttle lever in position??? Etc???

This is the same boat, 34' Silverton twin screw, in note 1147!

It's a simple friction adjustment that may be internal or external
depending on which control you have. Morse makes LOTS of different
    configurations.
1151.2depends on the type of throttle handle.MR3MI1::BORZUMATOTue Feb 08 1994 10:0924
If you have the type with a brass chrome plated dome take off this cover and

there should be a friction adjustment under it.

the above has the round red and black knobs.

there is another style, whaich has no removable cover. there are friction

screws on each side of the housing, simply turn until the amount of friction

is achieved.

when you say it falls of, this concerns me to some degree, the cable

should hold the throttle in its position. the friction adjustment

makes it a little harder to move it around. it shouldn't be falling

as you describe.

I believe you have the same problem i had last year. The throttle
control lever would swing back to idle so I too had to hold it or
tie it to the binacle. Then I was told that there was not enough friction
between the jacket of the cable and the wire and to put a couple of
hose clamps on the cable and adjust them accordingly till the lever
stays where it is set. I did and works fine.
Ofcourse could be a spring that went bad also.
Good luck.New cables cost a bit.

actually the cost of a new cable is not that bad. if i remember it

was less than $30. this was the heavier duty of the choices.

replacement is pretty easy. tape one to the other and pull.

The boat has twin screws with both upper and lower helms, so replacing cables looks
like a real bear!

One throttle will hold position for about 30 sec, and then start gradually slipping
down. It's enough that I have to keep my hand on it. It only happens over part of the
throttle range --- I think from about 2500 to 3000 RPM (right where I want to use it
most of the time). The other throttle is fine!

I do have the removable "Chrome-Dome" style covers with lots of adjusting nuts and
stuff under them. I'll look for the brake adjusters, and if there not there, try a
clamp!!
