1098.0. "Info Needed 19' Monarch" by FORMUL::BROOKS () Thu Aug 12 1993 13:16
Information Needed - Monarch Targa 191
I'm giving serious consideration to the purchase of a 19' Monarch
Targa and would appreciate any and all information relative to the
Manufacturer, the boat and the asking price.
Boat Style: Cuddy Cabin with Head also has overhead spoiler similar to
boat on Miami Vice.
Motor: 190 hp Mercruiser (4 cyl w/4bl carb)
Motor has a new shot block, complete outdrive and flywheel
Accesories: Twin Teak dive platform, depth finder, anchor, life vests,
full camper canvas, drive-on trailer with tandem wheels
and chrome rims, new battery
History: Boat has approximately 50 hours use due to the fact that
owner hit a rock in Lake Winni and let the boat sit for
2 year before repairing. Upon installation of an entire
outdrive the engine blew due to a manufacture defect. The
manufacturer would not honor the warantee so the boat sat
for 4 years until the owner could afford a shot block.
The owner is now moving to Florida and wants to get rid of
the boat.
Condition: The boat and trailer need a good cleaning and buffing as
they have been sitting for many years, however both are
basically in excellent condition.
Price: The asking price is $6K (is this a good deal?)

1098.1 | With all that new but untried stuff, its scary | SOLVIT::CHACE | My favorite season is getting nearer! | Thu Aug 12 1993 13:56 | 16 |

I'd stay away from it. It could have many expensive problems:
Who did the repair, how well was it done and is there a warranty on
it?
Has the engine been run much since it was replaced? For that
matter, has the outdrive been used? Either or both of these could have
'normal' defects which may take a little while to show up. Are they
covered by warranty? By whom?
How old IS this boat? What sort of shape is the trailer in? I think
if it is say 5-6 years old and in VERY good condition, it is worth
maybe 6-9K. (Though I'm not familiar with that particular boat)

1098.2 | More on the Monark 19' Cuddy | FORMUL::BROOKS | | Thu Aug 12 1993 14:20 | 22 |
| REply to note 1098.1
Both the boat and trailer are in good condition. I would not say
excellent as the trailer has a little surface rust and the boat is
in dire need of an interior cleaning and an exterior buffing.
The engine rebuild was done by a respected hi-performance mechanic
who is a friend of the owner. The rebuild was done as a favor and I
don't believe it includes a warantee.
The engine was just installed in the boat last weekend and has not been
run since the rebuild. Her maiden voyage is this weekend.
Note: The owner of the boat is my wife's uncle.
Thanks for the info. and advice.

1098.3 | No regrets with MonArk | COAL05::WHITMAN | Acid Rain Burns my Bass | Thu Aug 12 1993 15:24 | 16 |
| I bought a MonArk 16' Fish-n-ski back in 1986. I've not used the boat
a lot, but have found it to be a fairly decent boat. The problems I've
experienced have to do with the water from my live-wells damageing the
particle-board seat/covers and some of the console switches. Because the
hull is lightweight it tends to flex when crossing wakes and rides "hard".
Nothing has come apart. Given the same budget I'd buy another one...
I was told back in '88-'89 that MonArk got out of the fiberglass boat
business and was only producing aluminum boats. The hull/deck molds for my
boat were sold to Cajun who upgraded the electronics and some of the deck
design...
No regrets...
