Are you absolutely certain that you got ALL of the fuel filters?
You could have a restricted fuel tank vent.
It could also be electronic/heat related

evening.

1085.3 | more stuff to check | SALEM::LAYTON | | Tue Jul 27 1993 14:46 | 9 |
| It's remotely possible that any rubber tubing on the intake side of the
fuel pump is collapsing from the suction.
What about vapor lock? Are the fuel lines near the engine well
insulated/away from the hot engine?
Are the floats in the carb correctly set?

1085.4 | check the check | STOWOA::SBAKER | | Wed Jul 28 1993 13:46 | 9 |
| There is a check valve in the fuel tank that gets pluged. This very
same thing happened to a friends boat last year and this is what I
found to be the problem. I know that my Nautique has one and most of
the other boats use them to stop the gas from siphoning back to the
tank. Check it out, Its located on top of the tank and its a ball type
check that crud in it and and won't open all the way. Let me know if
I'am wright, I love when that happens.

1085.5 | clean and replace. | USCTR1::BORZUMATO | | Wed Jul 28 1993 14:10 | 11 |
|
NO NO NO< its and anti-siphon valve to keep it from being
siphoned to the engine in case of a fire.
Simple, when ther's no pressure on it, it shuts off the supply.
and yes they can get full of crud, just clean out and put back.

| In the one that I fixed in the same type of boat with the same exact
symptoms had nothing to do with pressure. The fuel is pulled through it
and checks tight back in the direction of the tank.

1085.7 | looks like the tank area. | 5062::OLSON | | Thu Jul 29 1993 13:07 | 16 |

Well some progress was made last night. To help isolate the problem I
put a new fuel line on at the fuel pump and ran it into a gas can, ran
like new. So, this supports all of the ideas so far. I then ran the
new line to the tank and tried again, same old problem. I took off the
vent line to rule out that, same problem. by this time it was 10:30
last night so..... tonights drill is to take out the fitting with the
check valve and bypass the water filter to remove it from the picture.
more as the saga unfolds............ this not sking is getting rather
irritating, startinglooking through the want advertiser last night with
my wife glaring at me.

1085.8 | it was the water seperator | RANGER::OLSON | | Fri Jul 30 1993 13:43 | 15 |
|
Well, it turns out to be a problem in the water seperator and
associated plumbing. When I removed the water seperator from the
fuel line by placing a simple in line fliter in its place all was
well again. So I've got the whole assemply off and am going to clean
it and replace the filter ( the current one is only a month old ).
The carb is also out for a rebuild. It was still acting a little
strange at idle and 2000-2500 rpm. The rebuild is only $85.
thanks for the suggestions.

1085.9 | Carb. rebuild ? | STOWOA::SBAKER | | Fri Jul 30 1993 16:19 | 3 |
| Glad to you got it fixed. Happiness is a ski boat that runs. Where are
you getting the carb rebuilt? I would like to get mine done after this
season.

1085.10 | Hobb's in Pelham, NH | SALEM::NORCROSS_W | | Mon Aug 02 1993 09:44 | 10 |
| I took my 26 year old (and very obsolete, ie: no rebuild kit available)
Carter ABD two barrel to Hobb's in Pelham, NH. (28 Windham Rd, RT 111,
right near the police station, 603-635-2415). They had it rebuilt for
$45 in three days. I put it back on the boat and it started right up.
I didn't even have to adjust it but maybe that was a fluke. The last
time I had it rebuilt ( I left untreated gas in it for 1.5 years) I
shipped it out to Michigan to a guy who specializes in obsolete marine
carbs. Cost me $125 plus UPS shipping. Glad I found Hobbs!!
I can give you better directions if you are interested.

| Mark,
One thing I would checkout in your case would be the potential for
getting bad gas, or contaminated. From reading what you are telling us,
the fuel/water seperator filter is only a month old, I would say you
could have some crud in your tank. Those filters are fairly big and can
handle alot.
As far as the check valve in the fuel line goes. I hand the same
problem with my boat when I first got it. It would run o.k. until you
nailed it and it would sputter and cut out. I took it back to the
dealer and they knocked the ball out of the inline check valve and
things have been fine ever since except for the metering rods in the
carb. One thing tha tIs an after effect after taking out the ball in
the check valve is you have to pump the throttle quit a bit when you
start it up. That's because the fuel will run back to the tank and you
are fully priming the system again before it starts.

1085.12 | I think I'm ready for a trade | RANGER::OLSON | | Tue Aug 03 1993 13:34 | 13 |
|
The carb went up to Hobb's, mentioned in an earlier not. I had taken
the check valve out of my other boat when it left me stranded. I never
associated the new need to pump the throttle to start it with the check
valve gone ! I do remember never having to do that though prior to
remove the valve.
Well there is also a hole in the hull that I discovered when taking the
floor panel up. It's right where the transmission is bolted in. So
I've sort of given up. Thursday night I'm going to look at an 88
mastercraft with the 454 and a powerslot.

| I have an empty trailer sitting in my yard if you need me to haul away
what's left. I'll even do you a favor and pick the carb up at Hobb's.
I work nearby. I won't even charge you my normal "trash hauling" fee.
