This may end up moving to another note however 1977 and earlier
outdrives (particularly if you ever own one) have some design features
of their own.
I had posted a note earlier about problems I was having with my 1977
OMC I/O. It had to do with "clunking" and a slipping transmission or
clutch under load (>3000 RPM). What I've learned to be the problem
meant the difference between a $1500+ repair bill or one that costs
$24.
To all current/future owners of 1977 and earlier models:
THE OUTDRIVE LUBRICANT SHOULD BE *PREMIUM* (formerly "TYPE-C") and
*not* HI-VISCOSITY.
When I first purchased this boat, I went to the dealership who
originally sold it to ensure I was getting the proper maintenance
items. The counterman assured me ($24/gal mind you) the lubricant
he gave me was correct. It wasn't and caused me 1/2 a season of
apprehension that I needed an overhaul.
Changed the lubricant (going from ~80w to ~40w) last night and *NO*
slippage. Of course, the temperature gauge did go to 240F and the
outdrive waterpump failed in its ability to provide fresh water to the
engine!!!
Oh well, it's in the shop as of today and I'll call them from the
airport tomorrow for instructions while I'm on the way to Bermuda to
forget about all this...."this" being my house a/c and furnace failing
as well as my '87 Ford Van that I tow the boat with.

| 1078.1 | Intermediate Housing Lube Lube -- how? | GUCCI::HERB | Al is the *first* name | Sun Nov 28 1993 20:58 | 5 |
Does anyone know what the procedure is to drain the lube (OMC Premium)
from the "Intermediate Housing"? The fill plug is located at the very
closest to the stern from the top of the outdrive. My Owner's Manual
simply says "see your local OMC dealer" but does indicate a yearly
change.

Yes Al, there's a plug on the side, maybe a foot from the top, its
'under' the moveable part of the housing - meaning you have to turn the
drive to the side (I forget which one) to get good access to the screw.
