Situation: Monday 9:00 am, uncovered the boat to enjoy first day of
vacation on the Cheasapeake,cooler packed,Jimmy Buffet's
new book stowed away, dog had relieved himself and was ready
for some swimming action and temp's around 85 and climbing
and low and behold i find the driver's side window shattered
and scattered about the inside of the boat.
When i bought this vessel 2 years ago,it was missing the
driver's side window.Previous owner said it had the covers
on to tight and heat built up and shattered it.He had pre-
vious ordered the window ($170.00) prior to putting it on
the market and installed prior to me taking ownership.I
had just been out on it sunday night and temps were cool
enuff not to buoild up and cover was loose and not tied
down.
My question is, has anyone else experienced this. The boat
is a 1988 19' bayliner capri cuddy. My thoughts are there must
be some stress type build up in the drivers side front to do
this but i can't imagine what it is other than a possible
design fluke.
So i spent the day cutting plexiglass (which worked well)
and cleaning up glass particles.
I wrote yesterday off and am about to embark agian this a.m.
` No tears please,as most of you know,a bad day on the water
still beats a good day at the office!
bon voyage

The same thing happened to me but it was caused by snow load during the
Winter distorting the upper windshield frame.
Glass is amazingly inflexible. I'd look for a badly aligned or bent
windshield frame which is stressing the glass such that even a minor
thermal or physical shock causes it to shatter

Awww - the thing was probably in an accident and the frame is bent!

I've noticed that almost all of the older boats used plexaglass on side
windows (min is 1977 vintage) but perhaps this is more due to
resistance to scratch for vision purposes. This boat, as well as my
previous (for 16 years) has never lost a side window.
You may have simply prevented a future occurance regardless of the
cause.
(where are you on the Chesapeake?)

Re .3
Plexiglass is not more resitant to scratching. I use to work in a
glass shop an we had to use a special cloth for cleaning plexiglass
because an ordinary paper towel can leave a nice scratched mess.

I launch out of Cheasapake City,MD.From there out of the Cheasapeake
and Delaware canal into the northern tip of the bay.Tkes about an
hour and forty five minutes to get to inner harbor.
This thursday we're taking off for Solomons Island, staying over at
the Holiday Inn's marina. Can't wait for their annual Coor's lite
bikini contest...
*ps plexi glass does scratch very easily.!

Re: .5
You have about an 8 hour run for Solomons Island..nice place. Holiday
Inn is the ONLY place to find coffee in the morning if you don't take
your own. You will be passing me as I'm located off the Magothy River
just adjacent to Dobbins (aka Dutchship) Island.
