    Well it's that time of year already , time for vacations. lets hear
    what kind of boating vacation you have planned for this summer and
    maybe a trip report upon return.
    I am leaving next Friday for an 8 day camping/boating vacation at
    Lake Shasta in Northern Cal by the Oregon border. There will be 4
    ski boats and 16 people. Can't wait this is gonna be a long 8 days.

1062.14 days on the Water!RIPPLE::WIELAND_DETake me away, LarsonThu Jun 17 1993 17:1317
    You're right, it is summer and I have my first boating excursion
    planned. We're leaving next Thursday for 4 days on the water. We're
    going to an area called Poulsbo (Polls-Bo) which is about a 4-hour trek
    from our marina. It's a District 16 rendezvous (Power Squadron I belong
    to) which includes dinner, dock-lucks, races, etc.

    The part I'm nervous about is I have to go through the Locks for the
    first time, *and* it's my first voyage on the Puget Sound (cross
    between a lake and an ocean).

    I went and bought lots of toys for the trip: VHF radio, boathook, oars,
    spotlight, charts, etc. I think I'm set, but I'd be willing to take
    any suggestions on what to bring for a safer trip!

    Wish me luck,

    Deb
1062.2SUMMER VACATION?MKOTS3::RONEYFri Jun 18 1993 10:4014

    Well, this may not be what you would call a boating vacation as much as
    frustration! I have a place on Lake Winnipesaukee, Meredith N.H., five
    weeks vacation on the books, sold my boat, want and found a new one,
    "WAR DEPT" says we don't need one( better known as the wife), I am
    totally bummed out and looks like this summer is going down the drain
    fast!
    Rick, Kenny, Wayne, I need your support for this one. There is a 25'
    Checkmate just waiting for me to pick it up!!!...........
    1989, very low hours, mint condition, 454 magnum, loaded with goodies,
    shall, we go get it??? SAY YES.........

    Bob,
    I say go for it, I love spending other people's money!
    Unfortunately, you're on your own. Monday is going to
    be our "Special Day" in our group, if you know what I
    mean. I may not be able to buy you a six-pack after
    that...

1062.5Sad StorySALEM::GILMANFri Jun 18 1993 12:326
    The moral of this story is buy the new boat BEFORE you sell the old
    one or at least check the wife's priorities out before you sell the
    old one. A sad story. What happened to the money which you got for
    the old boat?

1062.6Life's just not worth living w/o a 25' checkmate!MCIS2::WILSONIs it 1996 yet?Fri Jun 18 1993 12:5510
Don't shed too many tears for Bob, he's WAY ahead of most of us
in the "he who dies with the most toys" contest! 8^)

Hi neighbor!

If the 25' Checkmate is beyond your means, set your sights a
little lower. Heck, my "best" boat is 40 years old, only 14'
long, and cost me 500 bucks total...

    Part of the money is on the bank and the rest went to my daughter's
    school tuition. By the way, no more tuition, she graduated last month!

    Hey Rick, I'll buy the six pak as long as you'll be there to help me
    drink them. Besides I couldn't think of a better co-pilot for a
    week-end shakedown than you. Oh ya, maybe we can get Kenny to go to or
    does he need a pass to go?

     Pass? For what? I've already spent two nice days on Winni so far this
    year and many more planned.

      Oh, but if I didn't need to build that garage.... Bob, who did you
    say was selling that Checkmate?

    What you have to do very tactfully is spend a tremendous amount of time
    looking for the toys for the right price and hopefully get contacts for
    the awareness of the stuff when it comes available. It's all related to
    time and patience, Oh ya and some kind of trading helps too!

    Don't forget that you do need some money as well!

1062.11Starting vacation a bit earlier than planned...MCIS2::WILSONIs it 1996 yet?Mon Jun 21 1993 14:4312
    Well, it looks as if I'll have LOTS of time to spend on
    the water this summer...  8^(

    Definite plans include a week up at Lake Winnipesaukee,
    the last week of July. And a trip to the 1000 Islands
    at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton NY, the first
    weekend of August. Their annual antique boat show is
    being held at the museum in conjunction with the Antique
    Outboard Motor Club "Nationals" that weekend.

    Deb, Since this is your first trip through the locks, do you know you

    	Three weeks at Winni again this year. I have the 4th July week
    and 2 weeks in August. The boat is waiting in braun bay (if its still
    floating) I havent seen it since Memorial day, but I am going up this
    weekend. Lots of boating and tubeing for the kids!!! Story land will
    have to be on the rainy day....

    John,

    you are not that far from my place. I'm in Patrician Shores whichn is
    about a 5-10 minute ride from Braun Bay to the west side of the
    shoreline going into Center Harbor. I'll be up there this week-end
    also.

    Have fun,

1062.15Vacation is starting!MKOTS3::RONEYThu Jun 24 1993 10:4614

    Well folks, there is a plan in place. The Checkmate will arrive at
    Meredith tommorrow afternoon for a shakedown week-end. Boy is the "WAR
    DEPT" going to be surprized to see it tied to the dock when she comes
    up Saturday morning. I gave the owner of the boat an invite to my place
    for the week-end, with the Checkmate of course. I also told the other
    half that some friends were coming up for the week-end. So there should
    be no divorce!!!

    Now to get her to go cruising with us!!! I'll have to keep it under
    40mph.....

    Bob...who...is....still...trying......
1062.16Here's the plan, now comes the actionAPACHE::URBANThu Jun 24 1993 11:4210
    I just gotta jump in here and wish you good luck with your plan! As
    one who has 'been there' a few times I admire your creativity. I can
    tell you that mine would see thru that SETUP in a heartbeat!

    I'll have to monitor 16 this weekend for distress calls involving
    a CHeckmate.

    Be sure and let us know...

1062.17MKOTS3::RONEYThu Jun 24 1993 12:2012
    Tom,

    You are right! She has also been thru this before. The big thing that I
    have going for me is that she knows I've wanted one of these beauties
    for a long time......

    You should have seen the creativity when I bought my truck. The best of
    that one was she really liked it once she spent the time to see what we
    were getting and how much we paid for it. You noticed I used "WE"
    statement. The only gotcha is she could care less about boats!

1062.18To be on the Sound, again!RIPPLE::WIELAND_DETake me away, LarsonMon Jun 28 1993 18:0018
    Re. -1 - you are a brave soul... I'm eager to know how it went - I
    didn't hear anything on 16, or did I just miss the MAYDAY! :-)

    My boating three days went really well! I manuevered the Locks and the
    Sound with only one little problem. As I went through the large locks,
    the 52' yacht I was tied up to decided that he'd show off and *untied*
    the bow of my boat *before* the gate opened!! He said "I can hold your
    boat, don't worry about it!" You guessed it, as the gates opened and
    the water started churning, I did a 180 right into his starboard - What
    a jerk!! Nothing and no one was hurt, I was just miffed at his
    carelessness. Needless to say the Lockmaster chewed him in half!

    Otherwise, the water, the sun, the people, the boat were all great.
    Now, how do I concentrate on selling??

    Cheers,

    Deb
1062.19What's next?MKOTS3::RONEYTue Jun 29 1993 11:0329
    Well here goes,

    The Checkmate did arrive on Friday afternoon. Boy that thing is nice!
    The owner offered to leave it for the week-end as be had some friends
    in the area he wanted to visit with. I had no problem with that....
    The "WAR DEPT" showed up Saturday morning as planned. My daughter and
    her boyfriend also came. My daughter spotted the boat first and
    politely mentioned to her mother that there was this big red and white
    thing tied to our dock. She immediately replied where's your father!
    It was one of those "Hi Hon look what we have to use for the week-end".
    Next statement was,"don't even think of it"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Well the kids and I had a ball in the Checkmate. It handles and
    performs beautifully.......
    On Sunday she actually went for a ride with us and did not say
    anything. Some actual statements were made about it doesn't pound like
    the other boat etc. We were heading up toward Meredith Bay when we saw
    all the boats lined up. Then I remembered reading about the blessing of
    the boats on Sunday. I asked her if she would like to go. Her reply was
    "you are going to need all the help you can get".
    The moral of the boating week-end venture was I didn't put down any
    money yet, but I haven't given up either! The kids thought it was
    great.... There are some points for me.

    All in all it was a good week-end

1062.20I wanna go backSCCAT::SHERRILLThu Jul 01 1993 16:3212

    Well I have returned from Lake Shasta and it was fantastic. Eight daye
    of boating , skiing and general nonsense. Of the five boats that went
    all but one suffered problems but were fixed very quickly. I lost a
    starter solenoid (sp) but it was at the slip I had rented , thirty
    dollars and an hour later I was back on the water.
    Shasta is a very big lake and we only covered about half of it , about
    four miles from the campsite we found a cove that the skiing was very
    good and stayed there quite a bit of time.
    Oh well back to the grindstone.

    Bob,
    	Why not remind the "WAR DEPT" that she's going to end up
    with the Checkmate anyway just as soon as you're declared the
    winner in the "He who dies with the most toys" contest? That'll
    work!!???
