1021.0. "Ski-booms for I/O boats?" by WONDER::CASABONA () Wed Sep 30 1992 18:21

My daughter has expressed interest in a ski boom. The problem is my boat
does not have the center mount pylon traditionally associated with competition
ski boats. - I have a CASAD pylon mounted just forward of the I/O motor box.
The only Booms I have seen require the center mount pylon.

Are any of you familiar with Booms for your basic 17-19 ft I/O (mostly) ski
    boat.
Any pointers appreciated. Vendors, prices, etc...

Thanks,
Rick

You'll have to go with a gunnel mount boom, which can be purchased
    from Barefoot International or Casad.

re .0

There is a guy on the Merrimac river with a Larson I/O with a
boom on it, approx across the back of the passenger fron/back seat,
maybe across to the gunnel on the driver's side too - I havn't looked
very closely. He seems to use it to teach small kids basic 2 ski type
skiing. Its probably one of the units mentioned in .1 I'll try to
catch him in conversation the next time I see him (though its getting
to be late season in the N.E.)

Alternatively, if its just one or two things your daughter
wants to learn on the boom, maybe we should hook up sometime and play
those games on my boat ??

Barefoot International sells a gunnel mount boom, as do as few other
mfg'rs of ski equipment. If your ski pylon is a 2" diameter then a
traditional mount boom might work, BI claims their ski pylon will
accept a boom. Or a gunnel mount would work....

Either way, they run around $350 for straight booms, and $375 if you
    need any contour bends.

A call to Overtons, Ski Ltd, or BI would get you the details. Locally
a boom could probably be ordered through Baert Marine (Plaistow,
Danvers, or Seabrook). Don't have any tele # with me. :^(

Thanks all for the quick response... I had a feeling they were out
there somewhere - now I know where to start. Reg hit it right on...
We knew the price of the Overtons for Centermount Pylons - (399). Sound
like the others are in the same ball park. For that $$$ and what I
think she wants to do with it, I'm not sure she is willing to accept
this in place of Birthday and Christmas Presents... but we'll see.
I have been wanting to get her hooked up with a ski group down the lake
to get some barefoot'n help - We'll see how serious she is next summer.

I'd like to see her start barefoot'n using the tried 'n true method of
kicking off "your last perfectly good ski". The first time I saw a
barefooter was on Candlewood like (Conn.) during my highschool days.
This guy raked out the beach, had a pair of leather seated shorts,
started about 50 feet from the water, and yelled 'hit it'. - The boat took
off, he ran to keep up. About 5 feet from the water - he sat down with
feet up, hit the water and gave us a good show. Sure looked painful
    but was quite impressive.

I have planted my loose foot in the water, but have not been able to
bring myself to let go of that perfectly good ski... Oh well, perhaps
    the next life.

    Thanks again.

    regards,
    Rick

    Rick,

I think if you hook up with Reg,he'll show you and your daughter
a safer and quicker way of learning to foot besides stepping off
    a ski.

But,then you'll have to invest in a couple of barefoot suits too. :-)

That is my hope, I seem to have learned a lot more about
teaching people how to do it than actually doing it myself the last
couple of years - oh well, those who can do, those who can't coach,
etc.

We've taken it off-line, currently awaiting Rick's response re
their sizes and weights to see if I can scrounge up a suit or two for
their first coupla runs - and whether they'll weather the weather
tomorrow morn' (-:
