id tend to look at an o/heat problem
next time it does it id check the voltage on the sender unit.
check the manual to see what it should be (guess would be 12 volts
if temp is ok) also the sender unit may be triggering
too soon.
how long since you changed the impeller.
do you dry start the motor before putting it in water as this
will wreck an impeller very quickly.

| The oil alarm is an intermitent sounding of the horn , the over heat
alarm is a constant sounding . They are very easily heard and the
difference is great.
I have had the same problem with the oil alarm , check on the fuel line
if the flow is restricted at all it can cause the problem. My dealer
advised me that not using resistor plugs can set up the same problem
with the VRO unit . The VRO and the fuel pump are one unit , if bad it
is costly to replace .

| I had that problem when I first got the boat. I checked with the
dealer and he said that happens if you use artificial oil. It seems
the oil doesn't mix with the gas as readily as it should and the
sensing unit goes off. I don't know about that and there was no
mention of anything like that in the owners manual, but I changed and
the alarm quit. Of course, all the other things mentioned could do it
too. Boats are fun!!!

| There are actually three different types of warning horn sounds.
They cover four different types of problems. They are spelled out in
the owners manual and are like this:
1 short beep every 20 seconds: High fuel line vacuum. (Probably a
partially clogged filter, but could be anything that causes fuel
restriction)
50% on and 50% off beeping: Low oil level.
Continuous warning tone: Overheating OR no oil flow.

Hi Everyone,
note .1 The impeller has not been changed, I don't do "dry starts" and
the water flow out of the motor is a good constant flow and normaly
not super hot, but you wouldn't want to leave your hand in there
for a long period of time.
.2 From the sound of the alarm it must be something with the oil,
since it is a intermittent alarm with not much of an interval.
.3 I'll check the line from the tank to the bulb, since from there
on has been replaced.
.4 I use "QuickSilver" two stroke oil, so I'll get some OMC oil
and see how it mixes, who knows it could be as simple as that.
.5 I definitely feel that this is oil relates.
I'll check these things out and report back.

1009.7 | A blockage in the cooling system? | TESSIE::DREW | | Mon Jul 20 1992 17:40 | 11 |
| I have a 1987 110 hp Johnson (same engine different cover). The only
time the warning horn has gone off was due to overheating when I had
the RPMs too high with the water jacket ears on and one other time when
a plastic bag in the water covered the water inlet. This was a steady
sounding alarm and it cleared up when the engine cooled.
Looking at the wiring diagram for the engine the only thing that can
cause the alarm to go off would be overheating (steady horn), low oil
(intermittant horn) and no oil(steady horn). You said that the problem
clears up if you shut it off or run it faster. I'd guess that you may
have a blockage in the cooling system or a poor pump.

1009.8 | Another POSSIBILITY | WRKSYS::ORLOWSKI | | Tue Jul 21 1992 08:52 | 8 |
| ...just another possibility. I found out this week that if the
ALTERNATOR is not charging because of a loose connection to the battery
or maybe a faulty alternator,,,,,,,,,the horn sounds continuously.
Maybe when you speed up,,,the charge from the atlernator increases ????
I have a 40HP EVINRUDE INJECTION.......

Question: What does the alarm sound like when there's water in the
bottom of the oil reservoir (from a crack in the cover)?
Answer: It's very quiet, in fact you can't hear it.
Quess what the results were.
I spoke with the dealer and he said that this is not an uncommon
occurrence.
Has anyone had this experience. The motor was an 1985 50HP.
Thanks, Steve Pantano

Cover? As in cover on the oil injection resevoir?
What alarm would sound for this? It wouldn't have been an "out of
oil" condition, would it?
Sorry about your motor...
