| Gordon,
This is getting to be a recurring theme, but call Whitney's in Leominster
at 508-534-8172. Charlie is in his 70's and operates out of a garage and
big old barn in his back yard.
He has mountains of old outboard motor parts, mostly OMC and Chrysler. He
also has brand new and N.O.S. (New Old Stock) accessories from as far back
as the 1950's. He carries complete used boat, motor, and trailer packages,
and also has outboards and trailers for sale individually. He also does
repairs on boats and OMC and Chrysler outboards. Most prices on new acc-
essories are better than dealers, prices on N.O.S. accessories and used
outboards and outboard parts can't be touched anywhere else.
He's got brand new canvas tops and bimini tops, for I believe $100 each.
The only catch is you have to bring your boat to his shop and find one that
will fit.
As I said, Charlie is in his 70's and operates a low key operation out of
his back yard. He has a LOT of stuff, and some of it needs to be searched
for and dug thru piles to get to. If you're looking for anything obscure,
that needs to be matched up, or will require some looking, you're much better
off to just drive there and see if he has it, rather than asking over the
phone if he has it. If you like looking and poking at old boat stuff, it'll
be worth the trip anyway.
One other note - Charlie is a one man operation and is closed for vacation
until July 13. When he's open, regular hours are 8:00 to 5:00 and evenings
from 6:00 to 8:00. He's also open Saturday mornings.

P.S. Good topic!

| Surely there must be somebody/place else besides Whitney's?
I think I was about two days away from starting this same topic myself.
<grin>
As much water and as many boats as there are in New England, *somebody*
must have developed a thriving floating-junk yard by now. (I don't mean
to disparage Whitney's, which I've never been to, but I would expect
such an operation to be anything but "low key.")
Anybody know of any such operation in the North Shore area?
Thanks.

Don't knock it til you've been there - I don't know what more I can
say. To me the "low key" is a plus. What is it that you're looking
for? Except for his fairly small selection of Merc parts, there's
not much related to outboard powered boats that he's unlikely to have.
A larger, more organized place that you seem to be looking for is
also more likely to be closer to the ocean and therefore have more
salty, corroded stuff. A LOT if Whitney's stuff comes from the Lake
George area and is salt and corrosion free.

Well, let's see....
I'm looking for a radio, some lights, some rods to hold the
canvas/plastic cover in place, a cable or two, and possibly an
auxiliary bench for a person to sit on one side to offset the weight of
the tanks lined up against the other side of the boat.
I'll be at Whitney's some time next month, I guess.
