998.0. "European Boat Licenses" by EVOSG6::WEBSTER () Wed Jun 24 1992 09:30

I am thinking of buying a boat in the near future to teach my two young sons
to waterski.

I have discovered that in France (where I am living temporarily), boat drivers
need licenses which costs around FF3000 and involve a lot of study culminating
in written and practical tests.

As far as I am aware, a boat owner in the UK doesn't need a license.

Are there any European readers that know if there any impending EEC regulations
that will affect UK boat owners.

998.1Only for the very wealthy....TOOK::SWISTJim Swist LKG2-2/T2 DTN 226-7102Wed Jun 24 1992 10:068
    Can't give you details but before I was a boater I lived in Europe
    and observed that pleasure boating was no where near as prevalent
    as it is here. Powerboating in particular is stifled by fuel
    costs 3-4 times higher than here plus an order of magnitude more
    beaurocracy and regulations. Even in wealthly countries like
    Germany and Switzerland you just don't see many non commercial boats.
    Sailing is easier but that doesn't help waterskiers much....

998.2Look for some ski clubs.COMET::KLEINMWhat do you mean I missed the gates?Wed Jun 24 1992 18:0313
    I have talked with a few skiers who have moved over here from different
    European countries. They were surprised when they came down to our
    lake and seen so many tournament boats. According to them,in Countries
    such as France,England,and Germany for exam. the club owns a towboat
    and everyone skis behind one boat,there are cases such as that over
    here,but not as much so as in Europe. I would look for some of these
    clubs who seemed to be very active in promoting water skiing at all
    levels and may be able to get your sons into the sport under controlled
    conditions. According to my sources,you would have to pay about
    $3.00/pass. And really,that is alot cheaper than owning your own boat
    anyway.
