971.0. "Dealers and Distributors and Manufacturers" by KAHALA::SUTER (Never too Hot!) Wed Apr 29 1992 12:28

    	I'm curious about Dealer-Distributor-manufacturer relationships.

My second gripe about Correct Craft is their network of
dealers (or lack thereof). My first gripe is their pricing structures
or lack thereof, but that's another topic.

I know of 3 Correct Craft (1 rumored) dealers that are not Correct
Craft dealers any longer. All this in the past several years. Is this
the "norm" in the industry with all brands? I've heard several rumors
about why these dealers aren't dealers any more. They range from "the
distributor was selling boats and shouldn't" to "there's just no
market".... Are all dealer/manufacturer relationships this rocky?

Also, unless I don't know about a dealer, this means Gouge Bros
Northwood or Sunapee for a CC dealer now.

Great products, lousy marketing..... Sound familiar???

I had called Parker's Boat House in southern Maine a few weeks back
looking for used American Skiers. Parker's sold Correct Craft twice in
the last 10 years. I forget why they stopped the first time but the
owner said the reason they stopped the second time, just 2-3 years ago,
was because the place in Rochester where they got their boats from was
underselling them to the public. Go figure.

I agree that relationships can vary.. I bought my small Yam from
Billerica Yamaha. I bought and took delivery in less than
    1 hour.

They were fromerly a Merc dealer. They had abandoned the line
    for several reasons.

1.Merc gave them a hard time regarding warranties..

    2. they had to carry 3 zillion $'s worth of parts.

with yam, their tied to the main dist. center, via their system,
they can access it, if a part is there they can reserve it.

the other is that most of the yams don't come back....

    you figure..

971.3Take the money and run!GOLF::WILSONWed Apr 29 1992 13:3915
This seems to be pretty common among boat dealers, the relationship
sours for whatever reason, and they drop one line and pick up another.
A dealer near my house has picked and/or dropped probably a half dozen
different boat lines in the last couple years.

There are enough struggling boat builders trying to get their boats
marketed, that taking on a line of boats seems to be somewhat easier
and less expensive than say picking up a Honda franchise. I would
think that dealers that do this though, are hurting themselves in the
long run. I'd rather buy a new boat from a stable dealer that has a
history of selling them for a long time, than from a dealer that a
history of switching brands every couple years and is no longer
servicing or selling my brand when I bring it back a year later.

I'd like to speak up a bit for my CC dealer, Forrest
in Tyngsborough. I don't think You're aiming at them, but I think
they've been selling CC for about half as long as CC have been sold, I
don't expect to see them selling brand-X in the future. My guess is
that they'll suffer with a lot of other folks through this recession,
if they last they may push CC again - or some other premium line.
There are other factors. I believe dealers are in business to make
money, I believe that that is the business of business {to whom should
I attribute this quote ?}
