954.0. "Lake Shirley is low..." by TPSYS::SOBECKY (It's bad luck to be superstitious..) Mon Mar 09 1992 10:53

    	Yesterday I drove around Lake Shirley, and noticed that the water
    	level is several feet lower than it should be. Now, I haven't been
    	to the lake in quite a while, so the water level may have been this
    	low all winter long.

    	Has the water level been lowered for a specific reason, such as
    	repairs?

    My brother-in-law used to live on Lake Shirley. They used to lower it
    so people could make repairs to their docks, etc. I don't remember if
    it was done every year or every couple. I know they lower Lake
    Monomanac every year around late November for that purpose.

    	Thanks, Wayne. I know that a couple of years back there was a
    	problem (dam?) that needed to be fixed at Shirley, and they
    	lowered it then, so I was just wonderin'...

    	I noticed that all the ice is out at Hickory Hills Lake..too bad
    	you can't put a motorboat in there. Today is a little too windy,
    	anyway.

954.3Strike back at those weedsEPSIII::SAYREWed Apr 15 1992 12:5911
Hi,
   I have a place on lake shirley and the lake is lowered every year.
The reason the lake is lowered is to keep the weeds down, allow dock repairs,
clean up of water fronts, and take protect the dam. Since it is such a shallow
lake it fills by June. I have not noticed the lake level rising lately. I am
not sure what is up with the dam. I hope we don't have another dry year like
1986 (or 5 I am not sure). I will be checking with the lake association to see
what is up, I'll let you know what I find.

	Ski season is almost here!!!

954.4Weeds down and ski tips up!RDVAX::FAUST_CLANCYmod ent eats/file=octave::eatsTue Jun 30 1992 16:5717
Hi!

I've put my boat in Lake Shirley for fun in the sun for the past three years.
It's a pretty good place to ski as well as to relax because there are enough
nooks and crannies to boat in and out of, as well as people who are not TOO
crazy or irresponsible. It is now June 30 (haven't made it quite there yet
but plan to over the 4th....) See you all there. Look for a bowrider with
NANA on the side. (As in NANA, NANA, hey, hey, hey, goodbye!)

What's this about the lake lowering to keep the weeds down? I live on Sandy
Pond in Ayer, (no boats with motors permitted) and it has boo-koo weeds!!
I would LOVE to find an environmentally correct way of getting rid of the
junque that grows and even strangles the fish..... I would think that
lowering the water level, exposes the ground to the sun, and actually
encourages growth.... Is my logic off here??

954.5There's vegetation and then there's "weeds"GEMVAX::JOHNHCWed Jul 01 1992 10:2320

    Yes.

    You need to know what "weeds" you have before you can determine the
    best management method. Lowering the lake to destroy native, natural
    aquatic vegetation leaves the area that was "cleaned" exposed to
    opportunistic exotic vegetation such as Eurasian Milfoil, Variable
    Milfoil, Fanwort, and others. These plants will destroy your body of
    water as you know it, and there is no environmentally sound way to rid
    the lake or pond of them other than hand-pulling. The problem with this
    method is that these plants grow so fast that, unless hand pulling is
    undertaken immediately after the plants are spotted, the infestation is
    usually too big for hand pulling to be effective.
