927.0. "Y valves and macerators" by NEMAIL::DAGOSTINO () Mon Nov 04 1991 05:38

    Hi all hope we all had a great '91 season - I did!

    Anyway,

    After living the jammed macerator pump ordeal, and you know what you
    have to do to replace the pump and clear the effluent (sp?), I
    installed a Y valve.

    Basically one end of the fork goes to the macerator pump and then to
    a through hull fitting. The other side of the fork goes to a side pump
    out port (the boat came out of Lake Winnipesauke). Of course the lower half
    of the Y connects to the holding tank.

    Quick diagram: /-----------> to side pump out port
                                     /
                                    /
    holding tank -------------------  Y lever
                  lower Y section   \
                                     \
                                      \ macerator-----------> to thru hull fitting

    The reason I did this is because if the macerator gets jammed again,
    I can pump out the tank from any pumping station and then work on
    removing the pump (not fun!). Problem is when I turn the Y to use the
    macerator, the flow from the tank is barely a dribble. It takes a LONG
    time to empty the tank, whereas before, when hooked directly to the
    holding tank, the stuff would 'shoot' out the side.

    Anybody else have the above configuration or run into this situation
    before?
                                             f
    Thanks

    Joe D'Agostino

927.1air leak on intake side?SALEM::LAYTONThu Nov 07 1991 12:236
    Wild guess dept:

    The Y valve is not air tight on the upper leg, which causes the
    macerator pump to cavitate?

    your sucking air from someplace, its easier for the pump to
    pull air (least resistance). put a bronze gate valve on
    the line that does NOT go to the macerator, and after the y.

    this should close off the other line for sure.

    if the y is the only change you made, the above has to work.

    you can test this out before you put in a valve, disconnect
    the y from the line, put your hand over the end of the y
    valve, turn on the macerator and see what happens...

927.3Check the seal on the Y Valve (oh yuck)FSOA::MCKIESun Nov 10 1991 09:4414
    Joe,

    It is possible that the Y valve is not seating well when you
    have it cover up the pump-out side. Hence the recommendation
    in .2. Although totally "yucky", you can put a new coat of
    lubricant on the seal after checking it.

    Is your pump still in the same position relative to the tank
    as it was before you installed all this good stuff?

    I did the same project this summer...
