919.0. "Registration Reciprocity" by BTOVT::BELL (Infinity gets tedious before its over) Wed Oct 09 1991 21:04

I'd like to start a note outlining each states registration
guidelines and perhaps address and phone numbers to get the
latest updates (especially if the entries are old).

before you hit NEXT ENTRY if you know Fla laws please
read the bottom of the note (plz plz plz)

I've hit the Keywords and dir/tit on recip and reg and
while there are plenty of notes on Mass/NH/Me registration
no one has thought to create a note with entries for each
state on registration recipricosity and general registration
    	info.

there shouldn't be more than 1 entry per state so that a person
can find registration recipricosity (or how about a better name)
with dir .* showing the state they care about. Nice and simple.
If new info arrives, the old note should be zapped so there
aren't duplicates or 500 replies with vague titles.

if this is an acceptable idea, I'll grab the Vermont book and
tap the stuff in. If the response is negative, I'll delete
    	the entry.

BUT ... first answer me about Florida (the reason I'm looking
    	for info)

I want to put a boat into Florida waters for about a week.
It's gonna be a brand new beast, under 16 ft, powered by
electric motors (if that matters). I hope it will have
out of state dealer "plates" but we the the DMV is still doing
their background check for dealer status ... it will be registered
in Vermont when we get it back here.

Ignoring the law hoping no one notices won't work in this case.
The Coast Guard classifies the vessel as a boat, but it is
actually a prototype 2-man submersible (so it's suppossed to
sink). It'll attract attention and we want it to be very legal.

Timeframe is end of October (yeah, I'm just thinking about what
    	is needed to be legal).

    						thanks for any help

send me E-Mail or make a fla entry

My cursory reading of the Florida rules says:
    	1) A vessel with any type of motor must be registered.
    	2) Florida recognizes out-of-state registrations for 90 days.

Depending on where you go in Florida, expect strict
enforcement. In South Florida, the local police, the county
sheriff, the Florida marine patrol and the coast guard are
all out helping you 'have a nice day'.

    Fla's reciprocal with everyone.

I'd call Fla before you head down there, get the SN# and info from
the boat your buying, register it in VT, buy the numbers, and when you
pick it up, slap the decals on it. I've never heard of a temporary
    boat registration.

Hmmm, a submersable... be tough for them to catch for a no wake
    viloation in that!

Vermont has Boat Dealer registration which is just like
new car dealer / used car dealer / trailer dealer plates
though I've never seen anyone with a boat dealer tag, it may
simply be a piece of paper rather than a plate ... we'll
    	find out soon I hope.

Can't register the new boat in Vermont unless we own it
(signed bill of sale or title) at which time you get to pay 5%
sales/use tax. The unit won't transfer until we receive training
and pay the last bit. I don't want to make final payment until we
do the final acceptance, and I'm sure the dealer won't like signing
paperwork w/o the money (though he might, I would be scared if he did).
He already sent us signed papers for the trailer though.

Thanks to Lee listing the phone # in .1 I can easily get the
"official" answer and a name of the person who gives me the answer
so I can blame someone else for bogus information.

The mfg is in Texas, we picked Fla because the NE is kinda
unsettled this time of year and we need to do a block of
water time to get formal training which is how to properly bump
into things you didn't see I expect ...

Gonna be the first time I've ever hoped I was in a boat that
    	DIDN'T float ;-)

Hey, Ed! Don't forget all of us back in NE who want a ride in that
"boat" once you get it into the water....

You might want to ask the same question in the FLORIDA notes
conference. TALLIS::FLORIDA There seems to be lots of very helpful
people there that might even go out of their way to find out what kind of
mess you're looking at.

Very interesting, you can't register it until you own it, but you can't
own it until you drive it and you can't drive it until you register it...
