885.0. "Question on ASTRO boat" by SOLVIT::PAPPAS () Mon Jul 29 1991 09:49

I put a deposit on an ASTRO alum V hull boat this weekend. My primary
purpose is fishing. I needed a boat big enough to fit 5 people because
my kids like to fish so I didn't buy a bass type boat.

The boat was used only this season and comes with a 9.9hp mercury and
trailer. EVERYTHING looks like it came out of the box! I got the guy
    down to $1,650 for everything.

My question is, is this package worth the money? I don't know what the
individual pieces would have costed me and maybe 1 to 2 years down the
road I may sell it for a bigger boat, can I recover my money?

    Ken,
You didn't mention the size, type of trailer etc but it sounds like
you did well. I bought a new 14' Grumman aluminum with a galvanized Cox
trailer in 1984 and a new 25 hp Merc for it in 1985. I remember paying
$1600+ for the motor and I think the boat and trailer were around
$1,500. Add a few excessories and your in the $3,500 neighborhood. I
know your motor is smaller but if the package is only a year old and
in excellent shape as you describe, it sounds reasonable.

I'm not familar with "Astro" but in 88 I bought a Smoker Craft 14'
with a 25hp Merc, and Easy Loader trailer for $2,500 and there is
no way you could replace that set up for that price anymore.

A friend of mine bought a 9.9 non-electric start last season. He did
alot of shopping around and ended up paying a little over $1000 just
for the motor so if you did get a trailer you got a boat for free.
