879.0. "Doug Russell Outdrive Exchange" by MAMTS3::WFIGANIAK (YEAH..GET THE RED ONE) Wed Jul 17 1991 10:55

Does anyone have any information on a place up in Mass. called Doug
Russells. He runs an ad in Boating and has what appears to be excellent
prices on rebuilt out drives and such. An example is a rebuilt
    drive,with exchange for $975.
Has anyone had any dealings with this place ?
    Thanks

DOUG IS THE DUDDIE FORD OF BOATS...A VERY LARGE MERC DEALER. USED TO BE
WHERE MAARINE USA WAS. HE LEASED THE BUILDING TO MARINE USA AND OPENED
ACCROSS THE STREET UNDER RUSSEL MARINE. WHEN IT HIT THE COURT, HE
CLAIMED HE WASN'T OPERATING IT, HIS TWIN BROTHER WAS. WORD IN THE AREA
IS....GOOD PRICES BUT ITS A CASH AND CARRY DEAL, AND HOPE YOU DON'THAVE
TO GO BACK FOR A PROBLEM. I DON'T BUY ANYTHING THERE....

A few years back a friend and I bought two brand new Checkmate ski
boats from him. He said he would beat anyone's price and he did. He
also threw in free two sets of a ski's in his showroom, Custom paint,
covers and these custom ski brackets. He originally only wanted to give
us one set of free skis but we tried getting what ever we could get out
of him. Besides he knew he was selling two boats and he probable has
all the stuff he gave us free in bulk. Overall we never had any
problems with either boat so we made out pretty well.

I HAVE PURCHASED PARTS FROM RUSSELL. HE RUNS A SHADY OPERATION. HE
REALLY IS NOT A MERCURY DEALER. HIS PARTS COME FROM SURPLUS. I
PURCHASED A PART THAT FAILED IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS (HYDRAULIC LIFT THAT
SPRUNG A LEAK). THE PART WAS SUPPOSEDLY NEW. HE WOULD NOT MAKE ANY
CONCESSIONS. ENDED UP BUYING A NEW ONE ACROSS THE STREET FOR NOT MUCH
MORE THAN HE CHARGED ME INITIALLY.

I purchased a "rebuilt" outrdive from Doug Russel to the tune of $1500-
it ate itself after about 30 hrs use, but after the 30 day
    unconditional warranty.

     All I can say is:

    His prices aren't so great
    	and
PRAY YOU DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM!!!!!

The nut that held the main drive gear on it's shaft came off!
Clearly a case of faulty workmanship - the locknut was a used one and
the factory manual warns specifically about ALWAYS using a new lockut
with loctite as this nut will come off otherwise!

I was (and still am) not a happy camper

Thanks for the input. I also received some info off line that was not
to positive. I'll be sure to steer away from this one.

I JUST PURCHASED A BRAND NEW OUTDRIVE FROM DOUG RUSSELL LAST WEEK
MONDAY...I BLEW MY OUTDRIVE AT 4:30 IN THE MORNING SEEKING A
SMOOTHER ANCHORAGE. IT WAS THE FIRST DAY OF MY WEEK VACATION
ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN. THE OUTDRIVE THAT BLEW WAS TOTALLY REBUILT
LAST OCTOBER BY THE MOST REPUTABLE REPAIR SHOP IN THE BURLINGTON
AREA..( I CAN'T SAY ANYTHING GOOD ABOUT HIM NOW! ).
I DIDN'T WANT TO LOSE ANY MORE OF MY VACATION THAN I HAD TO SO
MY WIFE AND I DECIDED TO PURCHASE A NEW OUTDRIVE AND GET BACK ON
THE LAKE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WELL AFTER CALLING A FEW DEALERS
IN THE BURLINGTON AREA I WAS SHOCKED AT THE PRICE OF A NEW OUTDRIVE.
THE BEST DEAL I COULD GET WAS $3500.00 AND WOULD HAVE TO WAIT AT LEAST
THREE DAYS TO A WEEK TO GET IT. THEN I REMEMBERED AN ADVERTISEMENT
IN THE TRAILERBOATS MAGAZINE...DOUG RUSSELL. I CALLED HIM AND HE SAID
YES HE HAS IT IN STOCK IF I WANT A NEW ONE AND ALSO COULD SELL ME A
    REBUILT ONE.....AND BRING CASH.
I DROVE FROM VERMONT WITH MY OLD OUTDRIVE AND LET HIM TEAR IT APART TO
ASSESS IT...IT WAS MISSING THREE TEETH FROM THE UPPER HALF AND WAS
HALF WAY THROUGH DIGESTING THE TEETH IN THE LOWER HALF. THAT WAS WHEN
I WAS SURE I DID NOT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH ANOTHER REBUILT.
( I THINK THEY ARE ALL BACKYARD MECHANICS ANYWAYS )
ANYWAYS I SAID I WANT A NEW UNIT...GIVE ME YOUR PRICE...
WELL AFTER DICKERING A WHILE, WHICH HE WILL DO, I PURCHASED A NEW
OUTDRIVE IN THE CRATE FOR $2560.00. I FIGURED I COULD TRUST THE
FACTORY OUTDRIVE....HOW COULD I GO WRONG?????

I WAS BACK IN VERMONT BY 8:00 THAT NIGHT AND WAS BACK ON THE LAKE
BY 9:00. I PUT OVER 300 MILES ON THE UNIT WITH NO PROBLEM THAT WEEK.

I CAN'T SAY ANYTHING WRONG ABOUT DOUG RUSSELLS' YET.

I dealt w/ Doug for many years (for parts) when I was buying insurance
boats, fixing them up, and selling them. He was one of the few people who had
regular access to Volvo parts for "short money". To re-affirm what people here
have been saying, IF you know what you are looking for and the market price,
You can *USUALLY* (again my experience is abit dated at this time) get it
cheaper fro Doug, but *NEVER* go back to him with a problem. I was an exception
because of the volume of parts business I generated, but I was sometimes in
the back room looks for something when "hard-cash" customers came back to
collect on warranties or promises, and they rarely got what they came for...

All in all its like handling man-eating creatures, if you have the
stomach for it and know you stuff, it can be fun, but

		"don't try it @ home"!...

Cheers,
Garry
