876.0. "Mercruiser outdrive repair" by BRWSKI::RESKER () Mon Jul 15 1991 14:48

I've got a boat with a Mercruiser 165 HP sterndrive. Around the middle of last
Summer the outdrive started making a knocking sound and it progressively got
worse. The boat was pulled from the water and stored for the Winter. I did
not get to bringing the boat to the shop until recently. The repair shop
I brought it to pulled the outdrive apart and said I need new gears and
bearings. They said the gears were mush, which I believe based on the sound
the outdrive was making when I pulled it late last Summer. They told me that
the damage was probably caused from the prop hitting something resulting in
damage to the gears which progressively got worse. Well I did hit a sand
bar two Summers ago (1989) and I got the prop reworked as a result. However the
noise began a Summer after I hit the sand bar (1990) and after I got the prop
fixed. The repair shop said the insurance adjuster would need to see a
damaged prop before even thinking about paying for the work.

The job is estimated to cost $1300 by the shop (Dedham Sportsmen Center).

Does anybody have any advice on how I should proceed with this?

Is it possible that the gear damage was not due to the prop hitting an
object? How are insurance companies to deal with in situations like this?

The lower unit lube was changed at the start of every season so I don't think
lack of maintenance was the cause.

Thanks in advance,

tim

I just went thru this process, see if i can help..

They will difinitely want some proof of damage. In my case
when i talked with the surveyor (i'll explain this later)
i told them i had just put on new props 2 weeks ago,
their statement was "sure you did" he ate those words,
as the marina doing the work, had their copy of the reciept.
A reciept dated for the time period of your incident, should
be adequate to prove your incident.

The problem in my mind is that it is now 2 years later.

There are several issues you need to be aware of:

    1. your deductible 2. depreciation thats applied to I/O's

I'd call them and discuss it.

The surveyor in my case was required because of the $'s limit
they establish, anything over this limit requires a surveyor,
it worked out in my favor, the marina had overlooked some damaged
parts which he insisted they replace, and they did.

Jim,

Well I did the prop repaired, and I got it repaired at the shop where the
boat is now. I didn't keep the receipt but maybe I can get the shop to find
their copy.

I'll try calling the insurance company.

thanks for you help,

    Or.......

...you could put a note in the boating note file asking for a
thoroughly trashed prop that matches your dimensions. Surely, everyone
has a prop at home that couldn't be fixed just one more time.

p.s. Let me know if you need a 13 x 19 in merc black.

I managed to get the shop to find their receipt for my prop repair. I guess
now the only problem that the insurance company may have is with timing:

Time of accident:	June 1989 - hit sandbar and damaged prop. Used the
boat the rest of the summer with damaged prop (not
real badly damaged). Didn't notice any outdrive
			problems. 50 hours on engine/outdrive.

Occurance of outdrive	July 1990 - First notice slight rapping in outdrive.
noise:

Outdrive blew out:	July 1990 - Outdrive went South one day and I didn't
use the boat until I pulled out of the water in
			September 1990.

Submitted Claim:	July 1991 - Boat had sat in storage all Winter and
didn't get it into the shop until July 1991.
Inspection revealed damage to gears possibly caused
by being run aground. 70 hours on engine/drive.

My argument is that initial damage was done due to hitting sandbar and
the damage worsened to the point on July 1991. It was a long time
between events but not a lot of boat use time.

We'll see what happens.

    Tim,

A contractor in my group found out that his Toyota had
a bent rear end in it, apparently from an accident which had
taken place 2 years prior. As I said to him, "give it a shot
with the insurance company". He did and they paid with little
or no hassle. I was amazed.....

876.7good question....BOSOX::BORZUMATOWed Jul 24 1991 13:4415
    Here's my guess:

I submitted a claim in June 91, i hit a rock. The first thing
out of the surveyors mouth, "Did you get back on your or, or
we're you towed" "A friend towed me"

I think if i said otherwise, he may have changed his judgement,
my guess is, the running gear was damaged, and i knew it,
running on my own would have worsened it.

I think they may give you a hassle, but i subscribe to the motto,
"the worst is a no answer" but don't give up..........

Good news. The insurance company (Metropolitan) is going to pay for the
repair costs minus a $250 deductible and repairs due to wear and tear.
They will pay over $1000.

I had to go back to the shop that sent my prop out for repair to get the
receipt. Fortunately I paid by check and was able to trace the date when
I made the payment. Didn't have to lie or cheat or anything!

Thanks for everybody's input into the matter.

Can anybody out there recommend a Mercury repair shop on or near Lake
    Winnipesaukee?

I've got a 50hp Mercury outboard that clearly needs somebody who
understands it to give it the once or twice over. It sounds like one of
the cylinders is misfiring every once in a while.

    Thanks.

876.11Greens in Hookset or Fay's in GilfordUNIFIX::FRENCHBill French 381-1859Mon Jun 29 1992 09:2416
Green's Marine in Hookset (on Rt 28) is a reputable Merc dealer
and has been in business for a long time. That is about an hour
    south of Winnipesaukee.

Although Fay's boatyard isn't a Merc dealer, the owner's (Merril Fay)
son Jeff does all the engine work and appears very knowledgable.
About 5 years ago he did an emergency water pump impeller replacement
on my Merc 4.5 between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on a Sunday mornng and charged
me $35 including labor. I'd call Fays and ask for Jeff, and either see
if he feels happy about working on it or getting a recommendation
from him. I see him working on Merc cruiser i/o all the time.
    Their number is 293-8000.

Bill (who just pulled his boat out of Fay's for a month to sample
some salt water cruising along the Maine & N.H. coast)

876.12Used outdrive maintenance Questions...???KWLITY::SUTERand now for something you'll really like!Tue Sep 03 1996 12:5826
I've found a used outdrive which was reasonably priced to replace
the stolen, uninsured drive which used to be bolted to my partner's Chris
Craft. This drive was in use 2 weeks ago, before the boat that it was attached
to was sent to the bottom of the lake.

A couple of questions for you I/O guys....

How much should I do to this drive before bolting it on?

		Impellor?
		Seals? Which ones?
		Inspect tolerances?

Can a fairly competent backyard machanic with a factory manual in
hand handle this work or is the Merc Outdrive something I should defer to
a "trained" I/O mechanic? If the latter, any recommendations?

Also, the cosmetics are not that great on the drive, looks like
it was in salt water, but the owner and the guy that hooked me up with it
(a former ACTIVE member of this conference) both say it's from the lake as
it's the only place the boat has ever been. Any hints on sanding & painting?

thanks,

Rick
