838.0. "Electronics RFI from Fishfinder" by LJOHUB::REDFIELD () Mon May 13 1991 22:50

Strangest thing happened last week.

I bought an Interphase DC-1000 fishfinder through a marine electronics
dealer and had them install it. Upon power up everything ran perfectly
until....

	1. When I powered up the VHF, I could "hear" the clicks
representing the sonar transmissions. Could not make them go
	away!

	2. When the unit was powered up and the loran was turned on. The
loran would not fix on a signal at the right s/n ratio.

The marine electronics folks attempted to work the problem to no avail.
they finally called Interphase who immediately knew what the problem was
and requested that the unit be sent in at our cost and they would ECO it
under warranty. Claimed that some boats had experience the problem.

When my guy asked them why they didn't do all units they actually responded
that boats without a VHF or Loran would experience no problems. Talk about
ineffective customer relations!

Additionally their "fix" was not always 100% effective.

Meanwhile I have their transducer mounted in thru-hull fashion and all
wired up with few alternatives. My dealer is working hard to support this.
Hopefully I will be operational by Memorial Day weekend.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

This is discussed extensively in the topic titled "VHF Radios".

I have the same problem as you do, except my Loran seems to be exempted
    - only the VHF gets trashed. I have tried everything including
shielding, grounding, DC isolation - I even wrapped the interior of the
fishfinder box with copper tape and grounded that. I've made many calls to the
manufacturer. Not to mention all the noter's suggestions in the above
referenced note. I've tried all of them.

I have given up. Other people with VHF and depthsounders in much
closer proximity than mine have no problem at all. Next time I'm gonna
buy both units at the same time and plig 'em in in the store before
    buying!
