now is Gamefisher. Hope you can put your motor back together again!

are made by Eska, which is not that big or reputable.

Note 983.0 Game Fisher Outboard? No replies
TRCOA::KUNAUS 15 lines 22-MAY-1992 16:13
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anybody know or remember which of the BIG outboard manufacturers
made the
GAME FISHER series of small outboards.
I have an opportunity to buy one used 9.9HP Game fisher outboard and I
have this feeling that this outboard was made by a reputable
manufacturer like Johnson/evinrod or Merc.
Does anyone have any experiences with this make of outboard or I am
buying a problem when it comes to parts availability.
Thanks
Martin

| I picked up an old Ted Williams 3hp that actually runs very well. Does
anyone have a owners manual for this outboard that I could copy? I'm
running a chainsaw oil/gas mix 16:1, what is the proper ratio for this
type of aircooled outboard? (I believe this might be a bit too heavy on
the oil).

Is that owners manual worth more with Ted's autograph on it?? ;-) ;-)

| If I remember correctly, Ted was the main sports huckster for Sears
back in the 60's. (At least I have his autugraph on the outboard. 8~)

| Ted Williams! I would belive he is knowledgeable about baseball. In
fact I could even go for a Ted Williams autographed baseball. But a
Ted Williams outboard? Hmmm.. I wonder how much experience he has
had with the repair/maintenance, and determining the reliability of
outboards? Guess I wouldn't buy a used car from him.

| Ted Williams was/is a sportsman interested in many sporty activities.
As to his autographed outboard, I'm unsure of it's manufacturer, but
it does run well (and is quite light being aircooled).

| Next after baseball, fishing was (one of?) Ted's great love.
So maybe he does knowsomething about motors.
Bill
If it hasn't already been said, I think his motors were sold by Sears.

who knows about a mid- 60's motor.

| Pretty good deal. Know something about outboards get you name on it
and make lots of money. I know something about outboards. Anybody
interested in slapping my name on an outboard case and making lots
of money? i.e. The "Jeff Gilman" super twin!
Joke.
Smile.

| Sear's has gotten their outboards from many sources, and sold
them under several names.
Dating back to the 'teens, they were called "MotorGo" and were
similar to the other exposed flywheel single and opposed twin
"rowboat" motors of the era. In the 30's and 40's, the name was
"Water Witch". The early Water Witches were made by Kissel, the
car company. Briefly the 'Witches were made by Johnson also, a
friend of mine has one of these, I think a 1929. A lot of Water
Witches were actually beautiful motors and had a "Twin Torpedo"
polished aluminum gas tank. Advertising showed a giant twin
fuselage bomber, with a resemblance to the gas tank. They also
had one with twin Torpedos and a wraparound rear section, which
is referred to as a "toilet seat" by collectors, because it looks
just like one. 8^)
In the 1950's, Sears motors became Elgins, and were made by
West Bend (West Bend later bacame Chrysler). A lot of the
50's Elgins actually ran pretty well. I have a nice 1954 Elgin
6 hp that runs great.
Sometime in the 60's, Sears motors became "Ted Williams". I don't
know much about them, but suspect they were all made by Eska, since
they don't resemble anything from any of the more reputable mfg'ers.
In the 80's, they became Gamefishers. Some of them are still made
by Eska, but I was told recently that the larger ones, the 15hp for
example, are made by Force. And of course, Force is owned by Mercury
Marine, and are built in Mercury plants now (new Forces say "by Mercury
Marine" right below "Force"). So it could be that the new/larger
Gamefishers aren't quite the tin can they were from the 60's to the
1980's.

| No, not as well as Ted. Guess we will have to count me out (so to
speak) regarding my name on outboards. Oh well.

827.18 | Ted Williams Problem | GERBIL::DUPONT | | Tue Feb 22 1994 10:51 | 18 |

I have an old Ted Williams 7 1/2 H.P. engine. It ran like a top
for a couple of seasons but then...
... when started and put into gear the engine would propel the boat
for a few seconds then seem to slip out of gear...racing so much I
thought the rivets would pop out of my boat. This in gear/out of gear
happens every few seconds and renders the motor useless.
Keeping in mind that I am not Mr. Goodwrench...
...Any theories to what the problem is...
...how to repair...
...who if anyone in Southern N.H. would repair it...
...is it worth repairing?
Thanks...chet

I have a twin to this engine and brought it over to Rick. He told me
that he work on Johnson and didn't have any manuals or parts for this type
of engine.
My problem sounds similar. I took my engine apart and the lower engine
is shot.
If you find a place to get parts, please let me know.
Thanks

827.26 | TED WILLIAMS MOTORS | OTOOA::LEBEN | | Fri Jul 07 1995 12:15 | 14 |
| My Dad bought a Ted Williams 7 1/2 HP from Sears quite a number of
years ago. The brute never ran right! You could always tell when Pop
was out fishing, because you could hear him coming/going down the lake
with a .5 to 1 minute of smooth motor noise, and then a miss; .5 to 1
minute of smooth motor noise, and then a miss. He took it back to
Sears at least three times for servicing, trying to get rid of the
miss. On the fourth trip he placed it rather firmly on the counter and
said: "I want to trade this piece of junk in on a new 6 HP Evinrude
over there!" Although it had been almost two years since he bought it,
they gave him exactly what he paid for it on a trade in. He never
regreted buying the Evinrude. Moral: stay away from Ted Williams
motors if you can help it.
