821.0. "What's a Jon boat?" by 16BITS::DELBALSO (I (spade) my (dog face)) Fri Apr 12 1991 12:54
I know this is booked as the Power boat conference, but maybe someone can
provide some info for me.
I've got a small pond (about 2 acres) that I'd like to spend some time on
but the inflatable vinyl boat is just too much of a pain to deal with
(unstore, inflate at house, drag a quarter mile to pond, use, drag back to
house, deflate, store). What I'd like is some sort of small rigid boat
that I could chain to a tree with a padlock back at the pond to make things
easier (walk to pond, unlock padlock, use boat, chain boat up, walk home).
I've been thinking of a small, cheap, used canoe, but I've also seen ads
for something called a Jon boat.
What exactly is a Jon boat and does it make sense for this type of application?
(Pond is no more than 5 feet deep anywhere and mostly a foot or so around the
edges, if that matters.) Oh, also, I don't want to spend more than $150 for
this.
Thanks,
-Jack

821.1 | Now if we put this 35hp motor on the back.... | NRADM::WILSON | On the boat again... | Fri Apr 12 1991 13:21 | 16 |
| Jack,
A jon boat sounds like it would be ideal for what you want. It's
a small boat with flat sides and a flat bottom which usually
curves upward slightly at the bow. They're usually about 10-12'
in length. With the flat bottom and no "V" in the bow they give
crappy ride in rough water which won't matter to you. The flat
bottom also makes them very stable at rest, which is just what you
want for floatng around a small pond.
You may be able to get something for $150, watch the ads here and
in the fishing notes file (fishing is only on line after 17:00).
And get a good lock and chain if you're leaving it in the woods.
Jon boats are just the ticket for would-be Tom Sawyers too.

| Thanks, Rick!
A agree that it sounds like exactly what I want. Based on your description,
I believe I've seen some of these.
Now, unfortuneately, the four or five that were in last week's WANT ADvertiser
(in my price range) have since been snatched up. . . sigh
I'll expand my search some.
Thanks again,

821.3 | go with a flat bottom | USRCV1::GEIBELL | NOTHIN LIKE FISH ON ! | Mon Apr 15 1991 14:00 | 19 |

Jack,
I would recomend a crawdad by coleman, its a plastic type that
it very strong. tough its ABS, I have one and it is great, I thought
about a canoe but since my wife cant swim we decided to go with the
crawdad $270.00 new.
This boat is a flat bottom, very light 1 person can handle it very
easily, I used to pick it mine up and put it on the roof of my car by
myself. I would recomend a cafeteria type swivel seat since the little
bench seats are very uncomfortable for the lower back.
Good luck,
Lee

| Jack,
Check the classified notes. There have been a few advertised there as
well as this conference.
Good luck!
