804.0. "BOSTON WHALER CANVAS OPTIONS" by MEMCL1::HENRICKSON () Fri Mar 08 1991 11:50

I'm interested in information on canvas options for Boston Whaler
boats. I have a new 17' Montauk which is presently planned to be
fitted with the larger 'sun top'. I'm now considering going back to
the 'flying top set' because of the option of having a forward shelter
with the smaller top. Does anyone with a Whaler have any experience
with this set (on the Montauk or a larger boat)? Is the forward
shelter useful in terms of space?

The option is rather costly from Whaler and I'd like to make sure it's
worth the investment. Also, has anyone any experience with aftermarket
    canvas for this boat?

Thanks for any input you can provide.

Congratulations on your boat. I'm sure you'll be very happy.
On to your question: I've got a smaller whaler and it's outfitted with
a suntop of some description. (factory) It's been very useful on
occasion, and at times, I've considered investigating whether a bow doger
(spray doger) was available. My interest would be to break the
wind and reduce the amount of spray. Depending on your intentions, this
can be a fairly important feature in an open boat. (I've seen very
nice setups on Aquasports.) I've also seen canvas rigged between the
bow rails of a newport - looked like a pretty good idea.
Right at the moment, I'm in the market for a cover....

Have you figured out how your rod holders (everyone who owns a whaler
must have rod holders - they're required by law) and antennas (sp)
are going to function when the 'roof' is raised...? The other
challange with canvas and a center console would seem to be storeage.
When it's stored does it restrict your ability to freely move around the
boat ? - presumably this is one of the major features of a center
    console design.

I've never actually seen a whaler with the full canvas setup but the
pictures make the boat look like a floating mobile home.
