I was checking around my engine to see why the tach wasn't working. The tach drive (mechanical tach) cable runs to a gear set that seems to drive off the front of the cam. The mechanism which goes into the cam is broken off and is free to slide in and out. It looks like it used to be a threaded pipe type arrangement but the threads are totally stripped. Is this mechanical drive type arrangement common on inboard engines (circa 1964/65)? I've seen mechanical tach drives on cars which came off the distributor but not off the front of the cam. Should I plan on converting to an electronic tach instead of trying to fix this set-up? It's tough trying to figure out if the prop/engine is functioning properly when you don't know what the engine is revving at. Note: the engine is a Interceptor 165 HP based on a 260 cubic inch Ford V-8. Thanks, Wayne

799.1 | I'd replace with new electronic tach! | MR4DEC::DCADMUS | Fri Feb 22 1991 13:41 | 19 | |
It is probably going to be a whole lot cheaper/simpler to replace the mechanical tach with a new electronic tach- the only problem is if you are going to have an obvious cosmetric problem where the current tach is mounted. If the hole where the old tach went is too big, then you'll need to sort this out. IF the parts are only a few $, then you may want to fix the old tach, but if the threads are stripped in the end of the cam- I'd plug 'er up and go with an electronic tach. It's a matter of $, parts availability, work and cosmetics, and condition of the existing cable and tach. Dick |
