| Ahhh, 2 of my favorite subjects. You ask which is better, but thats
pretty subjective. Better in what way? Fuel usage, sea handling,
comfort, fishability, construction? The hatteras line (until recently)
tended to be the more comfort oriented, i.e living room, galley area.
While the bertrams were somewhat faster and handled rough seas a little
better with their nice deep-v. You paid for the running in rough seas
tho, with a little more roll while trolling. The bertrams have come a
long way since the somewhat spartan 31. And both lines big boats (ships?)
now claim cruising speeds in the mid 20's I believe. I guess it depends
on what you want to do with the boat, and the age and size of the boats
you're comparing. In general quality, I think they're both equals and
I envy anyone that has either one of any age :-)

789.2 | Bertram wins by a nose! | LJOHUB::REDFIELD | | Fri Feb 01 1991 08:17 | 15 |
| Some boating mag in the last 6 months did a one for one comaparison.
Weighted certain key factors and came to a conclusion that the Bertram was
the winner, but only by a very small margin.
I will look around to see if I can find the article and I will post the
significant portions.
I have a 28' Bertram FBCII and am very satisfied with it. To me, for my
type of use it far exceeds any similar sized boats. Hatteras, of course,
does not make anything that small so I never had the privilege of making
that particular set of tradeoffs and decision.
It certainly must be a fun process to have to decide!

789.3 | Hatteras was really built! | SALISH::SASLOW_ST | STEVE | Fri Feb 01 1991 12:39 | 16 |
| The smallest boat Hatteras makes is a 38' Convertible. With 671 Diesels
it comes to about $400-425K in 1991. Pretty remarkable considering a
38' Bayliner goes for $159K.(No comparison)
I recently was on a new 61' Hatteras Cockpit Motor Yacht. It was on
sale for ONLY $1.15 Million (Boat Show Special).
However, it was a trip to walk into the engine room and see the
workmanship. Every cable was individually run along the bulkhead and
fastened every 10 inches. It had 2 inch stainless steel railings to
hold on to while working on the engine. ( I mean, while your mechanic
works on the engine.)
Everything was heavy duty, first class. The sea strainers were the
biggest I had ever seen and were solid bronze. This thing was built to
last.

| Yes, the 38' Convertible is the smallest Hatteras makes.

789.6 | six of one, half dozen of the other | UPWARD::WOYAK | | Mon Feb 11 1991 15:19 | 9 |
| I believe, as has been stated earlier, that these two are quite equal
and it boils down to taste..The Bertrams seem to have a bit more
weight. I had a Bertram 43 and a friend has a Hatteras and he liked his
better because the interior walkways were wider..As I said "taste"..For a
pure sport (read fishing) boat the Rybo I had before was better, in
seas- backing down-you name it, but did not have near the creature
comforts. Without going to semi custom rigs it would be hard to beat
either a Hatteras or Bertram.

I really envy you! Sounds like you've had about the best made! Do you
ever make canyon runs, and if so if you need a crew let me know.
Driving a GW, but hoping for any of those beautiful sport fishers!

789.8 | Discounts for Bertrams! | LJOHUB::REDFIELD | | Fri Feb 15 1991 10:16 | 13 |
| I just received in yesterdays mail a coupon that is conceivably worth $100K
to some luck person. I am willing to part with this coupon to the first
requestor!
What I received was a coupon from Bertram. It was a 5% off coupon on any
boat in their line purchased at the Miami Boat show. Since the Bertram 72
goes for about $2M, this coupon could really be worth a quite a bit to the
lucky buyer...and it is transferrable.
Such a deal!

| I can't recall if it is Bertram of Hatteras, but as the advertisement says:
No-one will ever ask why you bought it !
I envy you the necessity of having to make a choice.

Absolutely transferrable, but you can use only one coupon. Its their way
of splitting the 10% luxury tax that all of wish we had enough money for
the base purchase to think about the extra 10% over a 100K.
I am just glad I have my Bertram 28 albeit an '86. It is a great machine.

Quite a few of the dealers/manufacturers in Miami were
offering to pay the tax to move boats.

789.13 | Deep Draft??? | HOTWTR::SASLOW_ST | STEVE | Mon Mar 16 1992 18:42 | 15 |
| I was looking at a 38' Hatteras Convertible this past weekend and was
surprised to find it had a draft of 4' 8". I thought this was a very
deep draft. Is this what makes the Hatteras such a great sea boat?
For comparison:
38 Hatteras Conv - 4' 8"
38 Golden Egg Conv - 3' 10"
40 Jefferson Conv - 3' 0"
38 Henriques Conv - 3' 10"
33 Bertram Conv - 3' 3"
50 Chris Constel MY - 4' 4"
The Hatteras must be one heck of a deep V.
