778.0. "Sealing Speedo pickups to transom" by KAHALA::SUTER () Wed Dec 26 1990 13:44

    	What would be the best substance for sealing things to
    a fiberglass hull? Specifically, my speedometer pickups which
    are mounted to the transom have loosened up over the past 490
    hours and I figure that I might as well seal them before
    tightening them, but I'm not sure what the white stuff is
    that currently resides between the hull and the pickups.

    Thanks,

    Rick

778.1Life CaulkGOLF::WILSONIt's not over til the opening kickoff...Wed Dec 26 1990 14:1512

    Rick,
    For below-waterline fittings use a product called Life Caulk.
    It will seal out water and help prevent screws from working
    loose. Spag's has it for about $4, or any decent marina should
    also have it. Regular silicone/rtv sealer will dissolve when
    left exposed to water.

    Getting ready for spring already? With this warm weather and
    open water it's tough not to think about it! 8^)

	Almost any silicon caulk, "tub 'n tile" would probably be
adequate, though not CG approved - and we DO need their approval for
everything in,on,around or near to our boats, right ?

	This sounds a little bit more serious - why are they getting
to be that way ? I hope nothing has "gone soft".

    Uh, I thought that the one thing silicon rubber is not recommended for
    is below-waterline applications. Polysulphide caulk is (Life-caulk or
    3M 5200).

    There's an interesting note in the ad in the Ward's catalog for the
    3M "5200" bedding compound: "Not recommended on plastics except
    fiberglass". No such warning on Life-calk. I assume that your
    speedometer pickup is plastic like mine. I used Life-calk in the seams
    of the bottom of my wood boat. Works good. Easy to use and remains
    flexible.

778.5The Factory speaks, again....ARCHER::SUTERWed Jan 09 1991 13:2911

    Here he goes again, calling the factory!

    CC in Orlando says they use Butyl Caulking for sealing the pickups
    to the transom. Guess I'll have to try and find some now. As for
    the possibility of soggy wood, Reg, I'll check on it and hope for
    the best. I did notice that one spot on the stringers under the
    rear seat has lost it's fiberglass and wood is exposed. After
    a winter of drying I'll seal that up also.
