773.1 | 1952 Elgin project | GOLF::WILSON | Why ask why? | Tue Dec 04 1990 12:47 | 13 |
|
I just picked up a 1952 Elgin 6hp twin, in excellent original
condition. The only obvious parts that it needs right now are
a carb kit for the Tillotson carb, and new ignition coils. The
original coils were made by Wico, I don't know if they are still
in business.
Does anyone know of parts sources for either of these items, or
for Elgins in general?
Thanks,
Rick

Some of the Elgins were made by scott-McCullough- so you might try
Electra- Marine- they are down in Long Island and their phone # is
located somewhere in here.
Some of the WICO coils may be available after market- lots of the auto
supply houses carry aa line of after market mageneto couos they can
special order- get the no off your coil and try calling around- at one
time I used to get the OMC coil through my local auto parts store-
about 40% less than my local freindly dealer.

773.3 | Want Advertiser had ads for old motors | SALEM::NORCROSS_W | | Wed Dec 05 1990 08:07 | 11 |
| About a month ago in the "Want Advertiser" there was a guy in Salem,
NH, who was selling a bunch of 1950 outboards. My boss has a 1959
Gale outboard on his boat and he was looking for some advice about it.
I talked to the guy's wife to find out if he had other parts besides
complete motors. I can try to find his number and post it if you
wish. I work in Salem (NIO) and could go see the guy if there is
something in particular you need. You might want to check a copy of
the Want Advertiser if you have a copy. he may still have ads running.
He had about 10 different entries in a row. I believe they were in
the "Boat Misc" or "Boat Accessories" section of the book.

I thought of calling an auto parts place too. Yesterday I tried B&D
Auto Electric, which is listed in the Nynex Boater's Directory. They
called Wico, and the coils *are* available, at get this, $64.37 each!
And I need two of them. I think I'll try my local NAPA store.
Elgin and Scott Atwater were two different manufacturers as far as I
know. This particular model that I have was built by Elgin and sold
by Sears. Unlike today's Sears motors, the Elgin markings are much
more prominent than the Sears markings. It only says Sears on the
starter pulley and serial number tag, and there are large Elgin decals
on the gas tank. A friend suggested I try calling Sears for the parts
I need and just give them the serial and model numbers, not the year
(1952). It's certainly worth a try - I've heard of them stocking some
pretty obscure stuff.
RE: .3
Yeah, I saw that guy in the Want Advertiser. Most of his motors aren't
cheap, and some of 'em are downright outrageous. Did his wife indicate
that he does sell parts also? Most of his stuff was OMC anyway.
As far as your boss'es Gale outboard, I'll send you some info offline on
contacting a guy in NH who has at least one Gale in his collection of over
150 *mint * antique outboards. He knows the history of almost every motor
ever made.
Thanks!

The gale and bucanner outboards are knock-offs of the OMC's-in fact OMC
sold the dies/molds,drawings of their older line to the GALE/Bucanner
folks. LOTS of parts are intechangeable between the Gales/Bucaneers
and Johnson/evirudes. I had a couple of old gales I used to keep my old
35 and 40 hp OMC motors going- the older 28,33, and 35 HP OMC motors
are pretty much the same as the G/B. parts I have interchanged:
Ignition assemblies (all the parts-coils, points, etc.)
Carbs
Fuel pumps
Water pumps
Lower units
lower unit internals
pull starters
I enven interchanged the ousings- had a Gale block and lower unit
mounted inside a Johnson 35 HP Upper housing/leg assembly
OMC pulled a boo-boo when they put a competitior with esentiallly
anidentical product in competiton with them and because of the lower
investment had a much more attractive pricing structure.

| RE: .9
Tom,
For the most part, antique outboards aren't worth all that much.
There are exceptions of course such as extremely rare or historically
important motors, but most of 'em aren't worth more than a few hundred
to a thousand dollars. In addition, 1950's motors are considered
"almost new" by some antiquers, and there's lots of them out there
that have been in continuous service since new.
The enthusiasts who are into it do it for the interest and as a hobby,
not for the money. There are enough motors available and popularity
is still low enough that prices have stayed very reasonable, in fact
surprisingly low.
My best guess is that by itself your motor is probably worth a couple
or three hundred bucks if it's in good cosmetic and running condition.
It's best value is by keeping it as part of a complete and running
boat/motor/trailer package, not as an antique.

773.16 | Fuel Line for '57 Evinrude | NEMAIL::COLVIN | | Tue Nov 03 1992 09:38 | 11 |
| I am looking for a source for a new fuel line (from the tank to the
motor) for a 1957 Evinrude 18 HP outboard. The original line gave up on
the last ride of the season this year (motor is on a 12' aluminum boat)
and I finished the ride holding my finger over the leak! It is a
double, pressurized line. I would also not mind replacing the fitting
which connects to the motor on the gas line. I live in the Boston area
and would like to find the parts over the winter. Mail order is fine,
too, but I have not seen these parts in any of the catalogs I have.
Thanks.

|
773.17 | It's available | GOLF::WILSON | | Tue Nov 03 1992 10:03 | 25 |
| Larry,
The fuel line is available from a couple places. The easiest local place
would be NAPA auto parts. Their marine catalog lists it in 50' rolls, I
don't know if they'll sell it to you in shorter lengths since the stores
don't usually stock it.
I bought a 50' roll recently from a mail order place in Tennessee, but I
only have about 8' left and need it for one of my motors. This weekend
we have an Antique Outboard Motor Club meet down in Connecticut - usually
one of the club members has the stuff for sale for $1.50/foot. Let me
know if you want me to pick some up for you.
Also, you don't really want to replace the female fuel line fitting if you
can help it. OMC carries them new, but they're about 40 bucks. No one
makes them aftermarket, as far as I know. It's no biggie though, because
OMC also sells new O-rings for them, and that's usually all that goes
wrong. They're a little tricky to replace, but not difficult once you
get the knack. With new o-rings and a little paint, you'll think you have
a new fitting. I can try to get the OMC part number for you if you want.
I can also get you a complete used pressure tank with fittings in nice
condition if you want a spare. Let me know if you're interested. These
are available new also, but at about $150 for the tank only.

773.19 | | GOLF::WILSON | Think Spring! | Wed May 26 1993 10:19 | 29 |
| I had an interesting experience last night. A friend from the Antique
Outboard Motor Club called me, and asked if I wanted to come over and help
him unpack his new Evinrude 5.5hp outboard.
No big deal, right? People buy and unpack new motors every day. Except
for one thing. This motor is a brand new *1960*, never removed from it's
original shipping container! Still addressed to the 93 year old (60 at the
time) man from Portsmouth NH, who had bought it new and had it shipped from
Lynn Outboards, and never even opened it. When found, it was stored in his
kitchen.
It was like a time capsule. We very carefully unpacked it, being careful
to save the box and not scratch the motor. It still has all the original
inspection tags, starting instructions, etc. attached to it. Those will
be left intact for display purposes. The original gas tank was also packed
inside, in perfect condition. It was pretty neat to see a 33 year old,
literally *brand new* motor coming out into the daylight for the first
time in so many years.
The motor will never be run. 1960 5.5's are a dime a dozen, or maybe a
couple hundred a piece. 8^) What makes this motor so valuable and
collectable is that it is literally brand new. The first time it is run,
or the first scratch or dent it receives, the motor will no longer be "new"
and will lose most of it's "uniqueness".
I know, any non-motorheads are probably bored to tears right about now,
but I thought it might interest the motorheads in the crowd...

| I wonder if it would run. Are there any parts (gaskets, rubber,
etc, insulation on wiring) that would deteriorate?
|
773.21 | Sure! | GOLF::WILSON | Think Spring! | Wed May 26 1993 12:56 | 15 |
| Oh yes, I'm sure it could be made to run very easily. All of the
rubber and plastic parts appeared to be in new condition. I've
got motors that are 40 years old, with original seals and gaskets
that are less than perfect, and they run fine.
About the only thing that would really need to be checked, is the
condition of the water pump. It could be dried up, and at minimum
would have taken a pretty good "set" after 33 years in one position.
It never will be checked though, because removing the retaining
bolts for the lower unit will crack and chip the paint from them,
affecting it's now "perfect" condition. Since the motor's not
going to be run anyway, the condition of the pump doesn't matter.

Now if I only had a 1960 Chevy which was as untouched and 'new' as
that outboard!

773.23 | I wouldn't have unpacked it!! | SALEM::NORCROSS_W | | Wed May 26 1993 13:36 | 14 |
| Rick, why did you guys even unpack it? Is he going to show it? I
probably would have left it in the original package for another 30
years or more. "Unpackaged" brand new is worth a whole lot more than
even 30 year old brand new! Save the packing material!
This "find" reminds me of the first time I dealt with A + A Marine out
in Manistee, Michigan, where the original Century Factory was located.
The guy who owns A + A bought out the Century parts inventory when they
first went backrupt back in '68. I called to see if he knew where I
could get an original style mooring cover for my '65. He had one in
stock that was a perfect fit that had been made back in '67 and sat on
the shelf ever since. Not as exciting as having a "brand new" 30 year
old motor, but pretty neat just the same.

| We unpacked it, because in the box it could barely be seen. Also,
the sheer size of the box would make it hard to display. All of
the packaging was saved so that it can be repackaged very easily.
As it was, it is going into a two car garage that contains 3 show
winning wooden boats, and over 50 rare antique outboards. The size
of the box was just too much...
Yes, I took several pictures as it came out of the box.
I suggested unpackaging it at the AOMC National meet in Clayton
NY this summer, like Geraldo with Al Capone's vault. But then,
we were afraid it would turn out to be a crusty old Elgin when
we took it out of the box as the cameras rolled. 8^)

I shorted out the regulator and the ammeter displayed a full charge
indicating that the regulator needs replacement (according to the

| I recently sold my older motor at a garage sale in Carp, Ontario. It
was a 1939 Evinrude 1.5 hp. Not a real big motor, but ran like a top.
The steering handle still had the original rubber grip on it with the
Evinrude name. I had it for sale for quite a while, but I finally let
it go for $100.00 Cdn., or $71.50 U.S. I also threw in a 5 hp Sears
air cooled motor that had the piston chamber broken on both sides.
Seeing as I only paid $25.00 CDN. for the Evinrude, I suppose I
shouldn't complain. You folks in the United States should think about
purchasing antique motors up here in Canada where your dollar goes 40%
further! Lots of garage sales and auctions where these old motors show
up, especially the auction sales. If anybody is interested, my uncle
is an Ottawa Valley auctioneer, and he could let me know when there
were any older motors coming up for sale in the future.
