771.0. "Marine Supply Houses?" by SALEM::NORCROSS_W () Mon Nov 19 1990 12:24

    Does anyone out there know of any marine supply houses that stock
    things? I've sent away for all the catalogues (Osco, Bliss, Overton)
    but I'ld like to go to a place where I can see what I'm buying.
    Example: I need to put a set of mufflers on my inboard. I called
    Overton's and the guy told me all my options regarding size, cost,
    adapters required, etc. I ended up more confused than when I started.
    I would like to go to a marine supply house where I can actually
    touch what I'm buying as I am not totally certain what will fit.
    I heard of a place in Salem, Mass. that supposedly is a boater's
    dream for mechanical needs. I've been to Bliss Marine (on Rt 128).
    They had alot of good things I needed (bilge pump, life jackets, etc.)
    but they mostly carry the fast moving things and have to order
    everything else. Also, are there any places around similiar to
    auto boneyards for marine? How about swap meets/flea markets for
    marine stuff? I don't mind traveling.
    Thanks, Wayne

    Try Ward's Marine in Winthrop MA. They're more into the "hard goods"
    end of things than the accessories most stores carry. Their catalog
    reflects that, with dozens of pages of pumps, manifolds, tuneup
    parts, etc.

    About the best stocked store I know of in the area is BOAT/US in
    Waltham, but like the others, you'll find they carry much more in
    the way of accesories than real hardware like manifolds or mufflers.

771.2Ward's Marine sounds goodSALEM::NORCROSS_WTue Nov 20 1990 09:367
    Rick, thanks for the lead. I spoke to Marty at Ward's. He's going to
    mail me their catalog but more importantly they seem to stock what I'm
    going to be needing this winter. By the way, the phone number there
    is: 617-846-1421 and they are located at 357 Shirley St., Winthrop if
    anyone else is interested. marty said that they carry everything right
    up to complete marine engines.

771.3Ward's catalog is pretty good.SALEM::NORCROSS_WThu Nov 29 1990 11:146
    I just received the latest Ward's catalog. It's the best catalog I've
    seen so far for "hardware" type stuff like exhaust manifolds, mufflers,
    complete engines, etc. I'll be keeping it at my desk so if anyone is
    in need of something, send me a message and I'll look up a price or
    you can get your own copy by calling Ward's @ 617-846-1421.

771.4WARD MARINE IS EXCELLENT!NEMAIL::MCKIESat Dec 01 1990 09:5810
    I have been going to Ward Marine for a couple of years now and they are
    very good, both in what they stock, the advice they give and the
    service-oriented attitude. I repowered my boat this year with engines
    purchased through them as a distributor. One of the bell housings was
    milled out of spec and so the transmission "froze" in forward several
    times and blew. Wards gave me *** one day replacement *** each of
    three times until we figured out what was wrong. Excellent service and
    no complaining. I have no idea how they did it, but they did!

    Does anyone have the 1993 Outer Banks catalog? Mine got trashed
    and I need the item number and description for something in
    it.

    Please send mail to LEVERS::SWEET if you've got one.

    Thanks,

    RE: .0

    Have you tried these:

    Marine Exchange, Rte 1 South, Danvers area (near 114/I95 intersect)?
    This place sells used as well as new items, and has a Spaggs look.

    Bliss Marine, Woburn, Jct 128 & I93?

    Boat/US, Waltham (off of Trepelo Road)?
