everything.
..."almost everything" is what you really want to investigate.
After reviewing the option for an extended warranty on my Yamaha
I found that the equipment covered seemed like the stuff that really
shouldn't break. I asked the dealer about the incident record
concerning repairs to major components for the Yamaha and he said they
had a very good track record. He wasn't pushing the extended warranty
but wanted to offer it. BTW, the price for these extended
warranties is negotiable.

| Extended Warranties can be good and bad.
1. you definitely need to understand what they cover. One of the
fella's at the marina got an extended warranty, he figured
he had it covered, guess what, it only covered things touched
by oil. Make sure you understand it..
2. If you do your own work, i mean more than the ordinary
it may not be worth it.
In summary if $300 bucks is the cost for 5 years get it.
for $75 a year you can't buy many parts.

753.3 | Use the warantee to clinch the deal! | IOENG::DHART | Vegetarian Extremist | Tue Sep 11 1990 17:51 | 23 |
| Don't forget to check the fine print. There is usualy a deductable amt.
which applies to each waranty claim. Extended waranties are insurance
policies, and should be looked upon as such. They typically have a
higher profit margin than the boat itself, and are one of the ways a
dealer can still make a good profit while discounting the boat during
a sale etc. The best way to evaluate your need for one is through
analysis of the reliability data of the insured components, so a little
homework may be in order. I have never seen a consumer organization
recommend an extended waranty unless it was heavily discounted to bring
the profit margin down to a reasonable level. One tactic that
sometimes works with automobile dealers is to use the warantee to your
advantage in making the deal. That is, settle on a price, and then hold
back on the actual deal until the dealer either throws in the warantee
for free, or includes it a very reasonable cost. You might be suprised
to find out how willing a dealer is to play with warantees that cost
him very little to begin with, especially if he knows it will clinch a
sale during hard times. Marine USA uses automobile selling tactics,
so you can use automobile buying leverage to good advantage.
Good Luck!

753.4 | Extended Warranties can turn out to be problems | USCTR1::FMACGILLIVRA | MACGILLIVRAY | Wed Sep 12 1990 10:11 | 30 |
| Be careful of extended warranties sold by marine dealers that are
underwritten by bonding companies. They are generally "second story"
insurance companies that minimize their risk responsibility. They
use adjusters that have some real questionable practices and will
haggle with your marine mechanic to lower their number of hours or
rate.
I had a bad experience with a company in Ohio on a policy that the
dealer "threw in to the deal" for a one year extended warranty.
When I had a problem, the marine dealer refused to deal with the
insurance adjuster and I had to make up the difference between what
the adjuster thought it should have been and the amount the marine
mechanic had quoted to do the job.
Also, beware of dealers not assinging the contract to the insurance
company. Heard of two case on my dock when a dealer in Cohasset went
out of business. Unless you receive your contract from the insurance
company within thirty days, you could be in trouble.
There could be a complete notes file on the abuses in the extended
warranty business for boats, cars, appliances, etc. For some reason
these businesses are not regulated by the state insurance commissions
and the deals they put together for the sellers of these contracts
makes it a real good margin producer for the sellers. That means
a whole lot of your money (the premium you pay) is only lining the
pocket of the dealer you purchased the contract from. That is why
the insurance companies have to rely on shotty adjustment practices
to pay for claims.

| Also note that "Warranty Companies" can, and do, go out of business.
Because they're not regulated, your state doesn't reassign the policies
to other companies, nor go after your lost premiums.

| They want $600 for this particular warranty. The sales manager said
that they could not come down on the price of it. Even when I said
come down on it or I won't take it. The Policy is backed by
Chrysler corporation so I don't think thier is a problem of them
goig out of buisness. I will be taking delivery of the boat Friday
so I still have a little time to try and talk them down. I have
never had an extended warranty on a vehicle because my father worked
for Chrysler corp. So when I dealer told me a repair would not be
covered I simply made a phone call and got it done...

You want to talk warranties,BUY A FOURWINNS,my FW was bought in the
spring of 88 with a three year 100% warranty on EVERYTHING.They gave me
two warranty cards, one card from omc the other card from fourwinns.I've
had all kinds a little things taken care of(speaker housings replaced,
trim gauge fixed, depth finder fixed) all LITTLE things!!!!!!
Now for the BIGGIE, I was fishing on lake Ontario the last
weekend in Aug. to Sept 9th.
24' FourWinns Cuddy
260 OMC Cobra
Second day into the trip I blew my engine!!!!!!!!!!!! cruising along
around 3500 rpm's pow,snap,snap,snap,snap,somthing flapping around in
there!!!!!!!!! Got towed in!!!!!
Well I was there for ten day's,and wasn't going to let it ruin my
trip!(Who am I trying to kind,I was about ready to puck,I felt so sick
about it)Anyway my brother inlaw was there with his 17' open bow so
left me his and brought back my boat and truck.PS. just not the same
fishing out of a 17 footer after a 24"!!!!!!
Well to make a long story short I told him to make an appointment for
me at the dealer went I got back.
Brought the boat in on Tues. dealer calls me this morning, says there's
a little man running around in my engine!!! I told him I knew that,to
get him the HELL out of there -).He said that they were real swampped
with winterizations that if I wasn't in a real hurry to get back out
fishing,he would put my boat on the back burner until things slowed
down, then start working on it.I told him I didn't want my boat sitting
out side all that time,he said no problem,we'll pull the engine and
lower unit and put them in the rack and I could come and get the boat!
I then said if this wasn't covered under warranty I wanted the boat
back to get started on It myself. NO PROBLEM he says I'll process the
warranty papers and you'll have a brand new short block sitting in a
crate right next to your engine by the time we get ready to work on
it!!!
NUFF said, brand new engine out of it!! just like a brand new boat
again!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, by the way I had 650hrs on that engine.would have had
over 700 if I could have fished the final eight days out.

| Just following on to one of the previous notes regarding the issue
of quality , SEA RAY or FOUR WINNS. My SEA RAY has never seen fresh
water and has been abused and thrashed by yours truly. I just don't
feel like I've had a complete day unless I get some good hard 50 mph
runs in on the afternoon chop. It's an 89 180BR (4.3Liter Merc). I've
returned from Avalon late afternoons with swells in excess of 10'(it's
a long (2 hours) tough, cold, wet (wearing a full wet suit),
exhilarating trip.) regularly. I've never had any problem with my SEA
RAY. It cranks up on the first try every time and still looks like new.
(24 months old on the 15th of SEPT.) I made a good investment and would
recommend it to others. It was a bit more expensive than some of the
others I looked into. Large sharks, which I've caught frequently
off the SO. CAL. coast fit rather nicely tied accross the swim steps
astern. Pulled Big John Mullins right out of his ski's when he
encountered an unexpected piece of chop skiing between the mainland and
Catalina.8*). I understand that the 200CC is available with the 260
Merc. now, that would be worth looking into. Oh I got carried away.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. All the triffles and the biggie.
