737.0. "I/O Bellows leaking" by CIMAMT::ZEREGA () Tue Aug 14 1990 15:25

    Hi folks, need some advice. I own a 27' Sea Ray with a Single engine,
    single I/O. I have a strong suspicion that bellow (BOOT) has a leak.
    Mater of fact I know It does. The gimble bearing is deteriorating due
    to the water. I can hear it starting to make noise due to the water,
    not bad, however I know that it will get worst as time goes by.
    Now the question????? Must I haul the boat and repair it now or could
    I waite till labor day? What is the worst that could happen? My concern
    is the second bearing, behind the gimble. The one for the spline,
    Could water reach that one and cause it to go? I think that the engine
    would need to come out to replace it. Any advice would be appreciated.

737.1Do it now...MKODEV::HAMELWed Aug 15 1990 11:3115
    Hi Al,

    	I had a 19' Sea Ray a few years ago on Lake Champlain in VT.
    	I had a similar problem with the "gimble ring" as my mechanic
    	called it. I opted to take the risk and wait 'til the end of
    	the season because it appeared as though the bearing had a good
    	deal of life left.

    	Finding myself in the middle of the lake, late in the evening,
    	with NO steering, convinced me that I made the wrong decision.
    	The whole assembly went south on me, in a hurry. I was fortunate
    	to find a quick tow.

    	The job cost me just under 1K to fix (ouch!). Good luck.

737.2OUT DRIVE WHINING AFTER LEAK FIXEDRIPPLE::ARROWSMIT_GATue Oct 08 1991 13:5215
    	I've got a 23' Larson with a 260 Mercruser outdrive. I've had
    	a water leak ever since the boat was new, however, my fear of
    	maintenance shops ($$$) kept me from taking the boat in. The leak
    	finally got bad enough that I dug out the shop manuals to learn
    	how the exhaust manifolds attach to the transom. I found that the
    	dealer didn't tighten the lower 12 point 3/8" exhaust manifold bolts.
    	Problem is that after tearing it all apart, out drive off to check
    	source of leak as well as skeg repair, the out drive "whines" more
    	than it used to at high RPM and load, I can reduce the whine by raising
    	out drive slightly at cruse speed which indicates the" U" joint is
    	whining.
    	How could I have misaligned the U joint? What stops the out drive
    	in the fully down poisition, is it the hydrolic lift's or a
    	mechanical thing?
