732.0. "Casco Bay Yacht Exchange?" by TOOK::SWIST (Jim Swist LKG2-2/T2 DTN 226-7102) Thu Aug 02 1990 10:57

Has anyone dealt with "Casco Bay Yacht Exchange" in South Freeport ME?

This is a used boat dealer with a large inventory and some very
attractive prices. The operation has a used-car lot atmosphere.

Just curious if anyone has any experiences with them.

I bought a dinghy from them several months ago. Watch their ads for
prices. You might have to ask for the price you saw in the ad.

I think some of the boats they sell have been repossessed by finance
companies. Know what you are buying. If the guy couldn't afford the
payments he probably didn't spend a lot on maintenance. A good book to
read before buying a used boat is "What Shape Is She In"; can't
    remember the author.

732.2Bought a boat from them last summer INET01::CARTERThu Aug 02 1990 16:188
I bought my boat from them last summer and I am pleased with it. Solid boat,
runs great, and the price was right. My boat came from Lake Winnepesauke. Irwin
Marine says Dodo from Casco buys a lot of boats up there. I understand they move
a lot of boats. They have service and repair shop down the road and across from
the sales yard. They also haul baots and do winter storage. My experience with
them was positive.

"Used Car Dealer" is the correct term for DODO (George Brockman) I
have know him for a couple years, nice guy, pleasant to talk to and
will take advantage of you at every turn. The only experience I had
with money was in selling a boat to him.

In Jan 1986 I bought a New 21 foot Carrazza, offshore racer for
$25,000.00. I moved to Maine in 87, got into real estate development
trouble and had to sell the boat in October 88.

Now comes DODO..... In August he offered to sell the boat for me at
$18,000.00, I left it at his place for a few weeks and had a couple
low offers. Went to Maine Med for some heart work and HAD to get
rid of the boat in October. Called him and he said he could give me
$13,000 or $14,000. I hauled to boat down to him and when the trailer
was unhooked he said he may only be able to give me $10,000 0r $11,000
    - I was just out of the hospital, and could barely move.... no way I
could haul it back to Wiscasset, and DODO knew it - I signed over the
paperwork. To his amazement when he went to write the check he only
had $7,000.00 left in the account....

Now he is a nice enough guy. The only way I will ever recover from
that experience is to buy a boat from him...... I sold cars for 20 years
so have a few tricks of my own.

One last thing. Most of his boats are on consignment from owners who
havn't had any luck selling themselves.
