731.0. "Waterskiing in Bermuda?" by TOTH::WHYNOT () Wed Aug 01 1990 11:10

With our tenth anniversary coming up, my wife (the fine woman that she is) is
taking me to Bermuda for a second honeymoon. This being my first time going to
Bermuda, I'm looking for a place to do some waterskiing that has *decent*
equipment. (i.e. preferably a real skiboat and recent model performance slalom
skis). Normally when I go to warm places, I bring along my ski with me and
find a towboat somewhere for hire. On business trips to warm climates, I've been
seen in airports with a briefcase in one hand and a ski in the other :^)
But, where this will be only a 4 night stay, I don't want to lug the ski with
me as I'll have the tennis rackets, snorkle gear, camera equipment, etc..

Looking at the Bermuda "handy reference map", I can see a few possibilities:

-Bermuda Water Sports and Ski Bermuda located at Grotto Bay.
-Shortz Watersports Centre located in Harrington Sound near Palmetto Hotel.
-Bermuda Waterski Centre located near the Somerset Bridge Hotel.

Any first hand knowledge of any of the above places (or others) with regard
to equipment, prices, etc??

Any info would be appreciated.

BTW: We'll be staying at Elbow Beach and the timeframe is late September.

Thanks,
Doug

Well, I'm back. Besides having a great time, here's some info on
    waterskiing.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
Bermuda Water Ski Centre (phone 234-3354)
    Robinson's Marina
    Somerset Bridge
                           Use Master Craft Boats
                           Connelly, EP, Kidder and O'brien.
                         Rates:
                                    1 hour........$75.00
                                    1/2 hour......$40.00
                                    15 min........$25.00

                         Lessons:
                                    1 hour........$80.00
                                    1/2 hour......$45.00

Rates apply to the boat, not per person. (up to 4 people per boat)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
Although that was the only place I got the rate sheet from, the
local's told me that they are all about the same prices. You have
to understand that they pay $5+ a gallon for gas right now and may
charge you extra. (the average car is about $65 for a fill up.)

My husband and I rented a 14ft whaler to go snorkling and they charged
us $10 extra when we got back for 2 gallons of gas.

The local people also recommended the Grotto Bay Beach Hotel (293-3328)
The Marriott's Castle Harbour also has waterskiing, phone (293-2543)

Staying at Elbow, you will be right in the middle of the island and
could go either way. By cab to Somerset or Grotto would be about $15,
and if you rent scooters, it takes about 25 min. to get to either.

Sorry that is all I got, it costs you $1 to make a local call from the
hotel, you may want to call each of these places and ask for more info.
or to make reservations, some require it.

    Have fun!

    Thanks Wendy,
Sounds better than I expected. (Equipment and prices, that is) Where
my wife and I would both be skiing, a half-hour hire could probably get
us each a couple of runs. (they wouldn't happen to have a slalom
course, would they...:^) ... oh, never mind...that's probably pushing
it.) Anyway, we're going down to be *tourists*, any hardcore skiing
can still be done when we get back.
Glad you had a good time, and thanks again,
    Doug

Well, the picture on the Water Ski Centre rate sheet is of
KENT RICHARDSON (Bermuda World-class Competitor) and he is
doing a course. It doesn't show the boat, only him going
around a buoy. So, they may have one.
