721.1 | its not too difficult... | HYEND::J_BORZUMATO | | Tue Jul 24 1990 12:33 | 17 |
| i'm not familiar with your boat. but i'll make an assumption
you have an inboard with 2 exhaust hoses exiting thru the transom.
If this is the case, here's an approach.
Mufflers are rated in horsepower, lets say your engine is 250hp,
if you want to keep the dual exhaust, then you would need 2
mufflers rated at 125hp each.
Next figure out what length you can fit between your manifolds
and the transom.
Be sure to double clamp all of your connections.
If you need new hose, make sure you use a "wet exhaust rated"
hose, its pricey, but there ain't no substitutes...

| Dean,
Check your trusty Overton's marine catalog, they have a couple of
different types and call them at 1-800-334-6541. Ask to talk to the
marine manager and discuss your application with him.
Another source is H&H Propeller in Salem Mass at 1-508-744-3806. I know
they sell all kinds of marine mufflers and exhaust hoses. Don't know if
yours would be on the shelf or not.
Or, call a Mastercraft dealer, get a part number and by them from
somewhere else to save a few bucks. :^)
Good luck,
Doug

Dean,
I assume your MC already has mufflers. Are you looking for
something quieter than the stock mufflers? If so, I would think
that most "straight" replacements would probably sound about
the same. How about fitting a new Nautique (Vernay) exhaust
system on it?

Mufflers. Ask them..

721.5 | Performance Boats sells/installs Mufflers | SALEM::NORCROSS_W | | Wed Jul 25 1990 15:02 | 10 |
| Dean, Performance Boat in Hooksett sells an in-line muffler
that's about 5 inches long (4 inches in diameter). They do
some pretty high performance boats there. I'm sure they
could help you out. By the way, if you plan on boating in
N.H., mufflers are required now on all boats. The allowable
DB level is based on what year your boat was manufactured.
Make sure you get a muffler capable of quieting the sound
to the level required for your boat's year.

Note 851.0 Help with selecting mufflers? No replies
SALEM::NORCROSS_W 15 lines 4-JUN-1991 11:54
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Help! I need to add mufflers to my inboard to get below 89 DB's
per N.H. laws. Before I couldn't find anything that would fit
now I'm finding too many types to make up my mind. I've narrowed the
search down to a couple specific types (neoprene from Ward's or
ski boat one's from Overton's) but the problem is that I have 2.5"
exhausts and everything is designed around 3" or larger. Everything
can be made to fit with bushings or adapters. Roger Gaudet has
installed the Overton mufflers on his boat and I am awaiting his
opinion on any power loss. Has anyone used the neoprene units?
The one muffler which I found with 2.5" inlets/outlets are cast iron
units in the Osco catalog. They are pretty cheap, would fit, and
wouldn't require adapters. Any reason why I couldn't use them?
This is for fresh water use only. They were $74 each.
Thanks for any help.

721.8 | Another source of marine mufflers | VFOFS::GALVIN | | Fri Jun 07 1991 14:48 | 22 |
| Wayne,
I have a catalog from a company called MM that is about a dozen pages
of mufflers, most of which are Fiberglas. This is the company that
makes the "Dapars" that are sold by Boat U.S. and others. I took a
glance at the MM catalog and they did have some with 2 1/2
inlets/outlets. The catalog is good because it gives several
dimensions for each muffler. I am not sure if they do retail
business, so if you contact them, you may want to ask about retailers
in your locality. The catalog I have is a few years old. Below is the
address.

P.S. You mentioned an Osco catalog. How can I get my hands on one of
those?

721.9 | H + H is their regional distributor | SALEM::NORCROSS_W | | Fri Jun 07 1991 15:41 | 9 |
| Thanks for the tip, Matt. I called the number in Florida to ask for a
catalog. They are out of them right now, the next printing is at the
end of the summer. She did tell me though that H + H propeller in
Salem, Mass. is their regional distributor and since I was heading down
to H + H next week to have my prop shaft shortened, I'll look at their
catalog. Good lead!
To get an Osco catalog and latest price list call: 215-855-8268. They
will mail you one free.

721.10 | H & H : Props? Fine. Anything else? Well.......... | ROGER::GAUDET | Nothing unreal exists | Mon Jun 10 1991 10:55 | 21 |
| It might benefit you to call H & H first regarding the mufflers. When I was
there a couple of months ago the guy showed me some Vernay mufflers. He didn't
have any MM mufflers. I ended up buying the Ski Boat Silencers by MM through
Overton's. My reason for going to H & H was to check on engine mounts, which
they were unable to help me with. So I asked about mufflers and the guy showed
me the Vernays (which were about a foot long, $170/pair, and for some reason
didn't give me this warm and fuzzy feeling that they'd do the same job as the
41" MM mufflers). And to top it all off, H & H couldn't help me with
couplings/fittings for my 2-1/2" exhaust. They referred me to Ward Marine in
Winthrop where I ended up buying almost everything I needed (except the mufflers
which, BTW, were also the Vernay bullet-type). Call Ward Marine (617-846-1421)
and ask for Gary. He's very helpful.
Maybe H & H will be more helpful since you're going there with a prop-related
issue. The guy didn't seem too enthusiastic about helping me with my muffler
problem, nor my engine mount problem, etc. Maybe he was having a bad day or
something, but the best thing he did for me was to tell me to go to Ward.
Just my opinion.

721.11 | One more muffler question. | SALEM::NORCROSS_W | | Tue Jun 11 1991 10:19 | 25 |
| Roger, H + H should at least have the MM catalog to let me see if MM
makes a "perfect fit" muffler with 2.5" inlet/outlet so I don't have to
go with adapters to get up to 3". I could then special order them.
The added cost of special ordering something would be offset by
not having to buy adapters. I put a Chevy V-8 in an Army Jeep with
exhaust adapters. Even with double clamps they would tend to leak
after awhile and constantly needed tightening.
I am pretty well convinced that I will be using the same mufflers as
you have. Seems to be the cleanest installation and best fit. I do
have one last question to throw out there. I just received my
membership to Boat/U.S. and their 1991 annual equipment catalog. On
page 56 they show a "Parker Muffler Silencer". The picture is not too
good but it looks like some type of rubber cap which mounts with screws
over the exhaust pipes on the outside of the boat. They claim 90%
noise reduction with less than 1.5 cubic inchback pressure @ 4000RPM.
They are only $30 each and I'm sure I could figure out how to mount
them in a less than permanent fashion should I want to return the boat
to total original condition (which so far it is.) They are good for up
to 275 HP which is 115 HP more than I have. Any thoughts on these?
What does 90% noise reduction mean? I know it's not linear, ie: if
you start with 100 DB (which is close to where the boat is now) it
won't bring it down to 10 DB. Also, I have never seen backpressure
figures listed for any of the other mufflers I've been looking at.
Any thoughts?
Thanks, Wayne

721.12 | Changed my mind, no mufflers! | SALEM::NORCROSS_W | | Mon Jul 29 1991 12:08 | 9 |
| After seeing all of the boats at the Lake Winny Antique and Classic
boat show this weekend, none of which had any forms of mufflers, I have
decided that the law requiring 89 DB's for my 1965 boat either isn't
enforced or 89 DB is louder than I thought. There was even a brand new
mahogany repro runabout (about a 20') with a 478 HP, 454 Cu.In. Chevy
that was running the exhaust straight out. If the Marine
Patrol isn't going to bother him then they aren't going to stop me with
my little 26 year old putt-putt.
