710.0. "IMP experience" by DSSDEV::ARNDT () Tue Jul 10 1990 16:43

    Hi,
I'm new to the boating seen (ownership that is) and I was looking at a
couple of different brands like Checkmate, IMP, Formula... and so far
the 26' IMP Elaganza is the one I like the most. Can anyone offer any
experience they might have had with IMP ??? Should I be looking at
other brands like Baja ??? Chaperal ??? Sea Ray ???

For what its worth the asking price for the IMP new is $41K and they
said they would take $36K for it.... it has a single 454 magnum.

    Well ?????

Thanks in advance for any and all advice 8*)

    Dennis

710.1What I know - if that means anything...AIMHI::SJOHNSONWed Jul 11 1990 12:5426
Sounds like the best price that you will be quoted for a boat that size
in the category that you're looking at. The Formulas, Checkmates,
BAJAs & Chaperals are more expensive than that. Sea Rays - I don't
know about as they are owned by the same Company as Bayliner now - so
we would not buy one of those.

We did just buy a '90 235 BAJA that is really 25'3" overall (including
swim platform) that listed at 44k. In fact we pick it up today! We
currently have a 20' Checkmate. We did look at the IMP last year and
they were real nice - as for quality I'm not sure if they're made well
or not - I would think that they are. We've always liked them but
unfortunately I don't know enough about them. If you're going to buy
through Jay's in NH on Winnisquam - I'm sure they'll give you a good deal
as they may go under if they haven't already.

Oh yah, as for the '91 BAJAs - they are being sold by Channel Marine on
Winnipesaukee. The new 260 that is replacing the 235 starts at like
42k. Owens will no longer be selling the BAJA line (the 91's and
    anything after that).

Keep us posted on what you do buy. They all sound real nice. I have
some magazines I could look them up in if you'd like. Reading up on
    them always helps.

    Good luck & happy hunting.

Yup, the IMP was a Jay's. Do you know anything about them ???

    Thanks

710.3Nothing really...AIMHI::SJOHNSONWed Jul 11 1990 15:3315
    Dennis,

Unfortunately, I don't know much about Jays - other than they are a
family business that recently moved their business across the street
to enlarge their storage & they seem really nice. We would have done
business w/ them if the #'s were right.

I'll keep my ears open & ask around for you.

I also remember hearing that they had to auction off some boats last
year - that might be a false rumor, but we weren't surprised to hear it
after seeing (in this economy) their new showroom & storage.

    Sorry!

    Dennis,

Yes, we did? It's real nice & runs great! We had to haul it up to
Winni last night for the first test drive (we didn't really)!

Have you looked at the "Mirage" yet? They are so nice, but heavy!
They have a lot of extras on it as does the Century (ei: wipers,
    headlights, sink, etc...).

Let me know what you end up buying? We love our BAJA so far!

I have two data points for you regarding IMP. A good friend's
dad was the company president a few years ago and he worked there
(in Kansas). He has very good things to say about the quality and
    service of the company.

Second, my neighbor has a 31' Eliganza. Very hot. Twin 454's.
You may have seen it on Winni (Red/Black...BLACKJACK). He has a
couple of relatively insignificant Gelcoat blisters. Overall he
is very happy with the performance, quality and handling.

    Good Luck,
