-<If it's not broke,don't fix it>-
But seriously......
SPRING
1. Change the engine oil. I know the accepted norm is to change
it in the fall to avoid freeze-ups etc. If you've got that
much water in your oil, you've got other problems. If you
get temp. extremes in the winter like we do in upstate
NY (-20 up to 60) condensation inside the engine does tend
to build up. So.....I'd rather start the season with nice
clean oil instead of hoping the accumulated water from
the winter will 'burn off'.
2. Pull the lower unit and...
a)inspect and grease the u-joints
b)clean, inspect and re-grease the drive shaft
c)replace o-rings on the shaft and water intake line along
with the large rubber seal(forgot what it's true name
is) and the gasket between the lower unit and gimbal
housing.
3. Grease the main gimbal bearing and pivot points.(basically
all the zirc fittings you can find)
4. Check for corroded shift cables while lower unit is off.
Spray some non-gumming oil on this and operate it a few
times into forward and reverse.
5. Lub the throttle/shift and power steering linkages/cables.
6. Do the standard check of hoses, belts and fluid levels
on the engine and power trim/tilt and tab pumps.
SUMMER
1. Call me lazy, but usually I only check the fluid levels
every 15-20 hours.
2. Adjust shift linkages if I notice the lack of "clean, crisp"
shifts.
FALL
1. Drain/replace lower unit oil.(any water here from the season
will freeze and crack the housing.
2. Fog the engine and open/remove drain petcocks or plugs
in the engine and exhaust manifolds. Disconnect water intake
and supply hoses.
