| The boat auctions are overadvertized, overrated rubbish.
In the US, you can get incredible boat deals right now, because the
bottom has fallen out of the used boat market. Just to give you an
idea, I just saw a very clean 1979 Bayliner Saratoga 25' for $7,500.
25' cabin cruisers/centre consoles, at about 5 years old, are now going
for about $10K, all over New England.

I read an article within the last week about a guy who had
NO ! success in his claim against customs officers who had drilled
holes in his hull and done all kinds of other tear apart damage to the
tune of ~$11,000. It seems the sniffer dogs had "become excited"
while near his boat at the dock-side, so the customs officers decided
to conduct a very detailed search - this was the day after he had
taken delivery of the boat. One can only speculate on what the
previous owner had carried in the boat, since the customs officers
found nothing...................

CUSTOMS AUCTION
Has anyone availed of the service advertised in Time magazine recently.
I'm sure it has appeared in other worldwide magazines, whereby this
agency will provide you with all the details of U.S. government
auctions, in advance i.e. boats, autos, homes etc. My interest
is in the boats section.
The advertisement shows a guy standing beside a $50,000 boat that
he bouth for $10 The charge is $200 once off to be put on the mailing
list of all U.S. government auctions.
Any information will be appreciated.
Regards,
Willie Shaw.

These services are a sham. The information is available free from the
governement. The fee simply saves you the trouble of discovering the
right agency. Even the government isn't stupid enough to sell a $50,000
boat for $10. What you see is most likely a boat that was worth $9,
bought for $10, with $100,000 worth of restoration to make it possible
to advertise it for $50,000 with an actual value of $35,000 - $40,000.
If you had the secret for buying $50,000 boats for $10 would you sell
it for $200, or would you buy the $50,000 boat and sell it at a "loss"
(to assure sale) for $25,000 and make $24,990?

686.6 | And Porches for $1????? | MACNAS::WSHAW | | Thu Jun 14 1990 06:06 | 15 |
| Thanks for the reply, but I really do not expect to get a boat or
even a propellor for $10. However, from this side of the Atlantic
I have have no idea where I would get the address of the relevant
U.S. government agencies that are having auctions, and I know that
at $200 is a lot of money to give to someone for a lot of addresses
that should be free to the public. Consequently, if anyone can
give me a telephone number in some U.S. government department I
would really apprecite it.
It would be interesting to read note 206.4 for his comment on U.S.
government auctions.
Many thanks again,
Willie Shaw.

Govt. seized boats, repos, and estate settlements are 99% handled
by brokers now where boats are bid on. Most sell to the tune of
10-20% above wholesale. The problem being "as is" etc. Even if
they get several bids and it still to low the credit institution
or leinholder can elect to wait for additional higher bids. With
the boat market slow, I feel you can do just as well on private
sales. Good Luck.

| I thought there was another auction note somewhere....
Does anyone know about the boat auction that was/is advertised on a
sign in the parking lot of Patrick's Pub in Gilford, across from B.
Mae's ? They(?) had one last fall too I think. I didn't make it up
north this weekend and I can't remember the date of the auction.

| The auction in Gilford was run by Michael Little
Auctioneers of Concord NH.
Boats of all kinds were sold dirt cheap. Terms were:
o 10% auction commission added to bid price.
o 20% down on day of auction (cash, CC or bank letter of credit)
o within 2 days, pay balance and pick up boat.
Prices were incredibly low. So low that Mr. Little warned
he might do without the boat auction next year.
There were lots of interesting boats power and
sail, to see... even if not buying.
