I need to buy an outboard for my 9' Livingston dinghy. My question is: What minimum horsepower will plane it? It is USCG rated at 8 HP maximum. An Evinrude dealer says a 6 HP will plane it but 6 HP motors don't have an integral gas tank which I want. Does anyone out there have a 9' Livingston and a 5HP motor? The Livingston is a double hull fiberglass boat which weighs 110 lbs with a beam of 53 inches.

are you sure you want an integral tank. i had a small motor with one and was very disappointed. 1. limited range. (unless you carry extra) 2. makes the motor more difficult to store, possible fuel spillage. 3. refueling was always fun, managed to get fuel everywhere but where i wanted it. External tanks today are sealed, not vented. Carry more fuel, to let you wonder further, without sweating your fuel supply. On the hp rating for your dinghy, get as close as you can to the max rating, 6 should do it. If you go to small you'll be disappointed. JIm. |
