659.0. "SUNRUNNER INFO REQUIRED" by CONFG5::HUNTER () Sun Apr 29 1990 20:02

    I have an opportunity to buy a nearly new (5 plus hours in the water
    only) 1989, 23' Sunrunner Weekender.

    Does anyone out there have any comments on the quality, handling, etc
    of this boat? Also on minimum power requirements?

    Tks...Barrie

    Does any one out there have any comments about the quality of these
    boats and/or comments on minimum power plant

659.1not good reports...HYEND::J_BORZUMATOMon Apr 30 1990 13:117
    This past fall, one of the boating mags, put them down pretty
    bad. Pretty, but cheaply made was one of the statements.
    Not sure, but didn't they go under.. maybe someone else
    has more info..

659.2I didn't choose it.NUTMEG::CUIPAWed May 02 1990 17:276
    I looked at them a couple of years ago. They had a real strong
    marketing approach and a lot of flashy things to hand out. The boats
    look really great. But when you begin to look at their construction,
    they become a bit suspect. However, The price tag was reflected
    accordingly.....

659.3I like my SunRunner !!!FSLENG::AUGERMon May 14 1990 14:0632
	Well being an owner of a 1986 275 SunRunner my opinion may be somewhat
biased - but it's at least based on personnel experience. I cannot speak on
23 footer, but I can on the 27' as well as on a 1985 31'(a friend boat).

	First SunRunner did file chapter 11 last year - they overextended
themselves by buying Burns Craft in Alabama to expand the large boat line, at
exactly the same time the new boat market went soft. They are now out of
trouble (per a recent edition of Boating Magazine) it had something to do with
a $100M contract with the Finish (I think) Goverment if I remember correctly.

	I love my boat - I only wish it was a few feet longer/wider but we
always want a bigger boat. The quality and workmanship of my 1986 is
excellent. I looked at many boats and manufactures before I bought this one
new in 86 and I'm quite satisfied. It handles well and still looks new. I
could have bought many other manufactures equivalent boats for less but I
chose SunRunner because it had the options/features I was looking for and the
quality was also there (Clearly not a Bayliner). My friend who owns a 1985
310 also loves his and has had very good luck with it.

	However I did look at the 1990 SunRunners at the boat show in February
and to be honest I'm not sure the workmanship is still there. The little
things like neatly harnessed wiring/plumbing etc was missing and the interior
finish work was sloppy (missing screws, loose/poorly laid carpeting etc).
If I had to make the decision over again I would not change, but if I had to
make the decision today - I'm not sure...Perhaps they recovered financially at
the expense of quality....

Good Luck...
