655.1 | try these | CSMET2::CHACE | is it getting warmer? | Thu Apr 19 1990 22:11 | 8 |

The first thing your friend should do is get some Boyesen reeds.
They will improve the performance of the engine from idle all the
way to top end AND the top end will be better (it will go faster)
Boyesen reeds are two-stage fiberglass reeds that replace the stock
metal (SS) reeds. They will cost about $200 for a V6.

655.4 | READ HOT BOAT MAGAZINE | POBOX::SWENSON | | Wed May 02 1990 15:49 | 6 |
| The last several issues of HOT BOAT magazine have been running articles
on a project boat they have been working on to improve performance.
They list all the modifications, sources with cost, and the resulting
performance gain. It appears the new reeds are almost as good as
Friday afternoon. However, the quickest and cheapest way to increase
performance appeared to be buy a larger motor up front.

655.6 | Bolt on HP? | FOR200::JOHNS | | Fri Mar 22 1996 10:06 | 21 |

Time to re-activate this string.
Anyone have any experience with GIL or other performance exhaust
systems??? I've read the trade rags, and heard the hype about bolt on
30hp BUT at what penalty???? How is maintainace with those devils???
It's already an acrobatic feat to change the inside rows of plugs.
Damn little space to work!
They are an atractive option right now for a couple reasons:
1) Increased performance with a fuel econimy gain (pretty rare!).
2) One of the stock manifolds is bad, so I expect the other 3 are in
similar shape. So I have to put out time and $ now anyway.
I have the MerCruiser 454/370's (with roller/rockers added and a slight
overbore for about 420's right now). I would be interested in
experiences with different systems for large or small blocks.
Garrison.
