Make sure that it's not to tight, stuffing boxes are suppose to
drip. Something like one drip per minute.

box. When still there should be no leak..

Once the stuffing boxes are apart, for reasons other than
the stuffing boxes, should they have new packing installed if
they didn't leak prior to disassembly?

| I'd put new stuffing in there. It's *very* cheap, easy to do, and well worth
the effort.

| Well, I repacked both rudders with the three pieces I have always seen
recommended, the boat has been in the water for two weeks now, and it
is totally dry. And the steering effort is the same as it always was. I
can't imagine why it only had the one piece in it before.
