Conference vicki::boats

    Rick, I also am considering ordering an Apelco Fish finder.  Which one
    did you order?  I have been considering the model 300.  Recently I
    noticed that Apelco has a Loran and fish finder that communicate
    providing a course record.  Have you or anyone else had any experience
    with these unit.  I think the loran is the model 6300, the fish finder
    I don't remember.  I also was considering the Outer Banks Marine
    Supply.  I think their price in the Boatshow sales catalog was better 
    than Rathyon Employees get.
    
    I haven't check the notes conference for info on accuracy of various
    units.  I was talking to a friend who spend 5 years in the Navy driving
    subs and his comment was that the units aren't really that accurate.  I
    was under the impression that one could vertually run over a buoy in a
    fog.  What experience do others have?
    
    I guess in retrospect this question may be mis-placed, but I'll leave
    it and hunt around the notes conference for other info.

    I bought a halon system from Outer Banks and they shipped promptly.
    I got about the same delivery as I get from BOAT/US. 5-7 Days to
    Seattle.
    

I ordered an antenna and mount from Outer Banks. Had it in about 5 days.
They were absolutely the cheapest at the time.

What I've found is that at any one time, if you were equipping a boat
from scratch, the cheapest prices would probably come by ordering from a
half-dozen different catalogs. Sometimes Outer Banks, sometimes
Defender... almost never Goldbergs...

Every now and then I get a catalog from some brand-new place and they'll
have the unbeatable price on certain items. I think they're leaders, to
get your attention.

My actual name is Arthur L. Hebert. Recently I filled out a reader
service card in Power and Motoryacht magazine, and filled in my name as
A. Lou Hebertt. I started getting catalogs under that name within about a
month, from companies I've never heard of. So, mailing lists are still
being sold/traded/whatever. Once you get on those lists you're assured of
almost daily mail.

       Loran accuracy is somewhat controversial; the ABSOLUTE accuracy
    of a LORAN unit (type the numbers in from a chart) CAN be fairly
    low (+- ~300 yards on cheaper/unaligned units), BUT the REPETETIVE
    accuracy (get a reading from where you are RIGHT NOW and use THAT
    number to get to the same place tomorrow) is usually quite good.
    Usually within a 100-200 FEET!
    
       Also, when considering what your friend from the Navy said, you
    must remember that LORANs have come a LONG way in just the last
    couple of years! I'd be willing to bet they are more accurate now
    than they were 4 years ago.

    the Marintek VIDEO or the APELCO XCD300 (the Marinetek is ~$100
    more, but the resolution is SO much better!) I can't decide!!

    Yeah, I know I had told you I was going to wait until my birthday
    in August, but our tax return came in already, and well, you can
    figure out the rest...  I ordered the Apelco XCD300, for $199.99.
    I know that the resolution (number of pixels) isn't that good, but 
    the better units cost almost twice as much, which would be tough to 
    justify since I'm not much of a fisherman.  I bought it mainly to
    use as a depthfinder and for occasional fishing, and it also shows 
    speed and surface temerature as a bonus.  I'll give a report on 
    whether the low price trade-off was worth it after I've used it 
    a while...

The Apelco XCD 300 that I ordered from Outer Banks on March 6 arrived
yesterday by UPS.  Not bad, delivery in only 4 working days, and it 
arrived as advertised and well packed with no damage.  Good service 
from Outer Banks, will have to wait and see about the Apelco once the 
boat hits the water.

	Has anyone tried the 12VDC 32quart coolers that NORTHERN has for sale?
THe sell for $99.00 and will either heat/cool the contents.  The price sounds
real low compared to other coolers I have seen on display in stores (~$200-300).
There is also a 110VAC adaptor for an additional $49.95.  Where we do alot of
camping/boating this looks the perfact option.  I have dual batteries with
isolators in both my boat and Truck so electrical drain is not an issue.
Any reference information would be appreciated.

    I bought one last year, my thoughts were to keep beer and soda cool
    and not have to buy ice. There is no compressor in them, and they
    work by dissipating (sp) heat thru an aluminum block. mfgrs.\
    claim they will keep the temp around 40 deg.  below the outside
    temp. turns out it was a big disappointment.
    
    Here's my experiment: i put in a case of beer around 6 p.m.
    the next evening the unit was down to 56 deg. at 6 p.m.
    i ran the unit at home on 110v. they also draw a constant
    4 amps an hour. 
    
    I returned the unit, and bought a Norcold refrigerator,
    its a small one and portable. i also bought a small generator
    to keep my batteries charged. the goal was to keep things cold,
    ice is a pain, and the boat refer is not big enough.
    we're very satisfied.
    
    i just don't think you'll be satisfied with the 12v cooler
    but you may not care for the cost of what i did.

A colleague dropped a couple of catalogs on my desk this morning.  One was the
Defender catalog, info already given in the previous note.  One addition to

    Hmm, that's interesting.  That number came off the 1990 catalog too!  I

    I was on the phone yesterday with the captain of a boat hauling us out
    to Stellwagen Bank next week. He was going to pick up about 300 feet of
    rope for us, but he hadn't done it yet when I talked to him. I was
    going to be in the area, so he told me I might as well pick it up
    myself, which was fine with me.
    
    Anyway, his voice was being broken up by radio interference, and all I
    could figure out was "$8/100ft," "right on Rte. 1 in Danvers," and
    "Cosgo..." or something. So on my way to Cape Ann yesterday, I detoured
    up Rte. 1 to find this place. All I could find was "Marine Exchange,"
    which was selling its cheapest rope for $39/100ft. 
    
    Does any of you know the name and location of the super-cheap marine
    goods store in Danvers on Rte. 1?
    
    I'd really rather pay $24 than $117 for rope we will only use four

This is worth a try. Call Memphis Net and Twine Company at 1-800-238-6380.  
They carry everything from baseball nets to commercial fishing equipment 
and gear, foul wather gear, (and you'll love this!) gill nets, rope, etc.  
They also carry a few recreational boating related items such as tuneup 
parts, and fuel tanks and line.

I've ordered tuneup stuff from them in the past, and their prices and
delivery time are excellent.  I have a copy of their catalog, but it's
at home.  Give them a call at the above number, tell them what you need,
and ask for a price quote.  Ask them to send you a free catalog too.

    Sounds like he was referring to Costco on Rt 1 Northbound just south of
    the Rt 114 intersection. Costco is a warehouse store like BJ's, or
    Sam's. They usually require membership, but you can get in on a one day
    pass if you are not a member.

    1/4" line in the boatus catalog is $.08/ft
    3/8" is $.17 or $19.95 for 100' roll or $32.95 for 200'
    
    I realize that it's probably too late to order it for your trip; but
    there is a boatus in Waltham.
    
    Also there are two boating stores on rte 1.  One is southbound in
    peabody near the pool hall and the other is northbound in the same
    general area.  I haven't been to either this year; but bought 600' of
    3/8" anchor rode two years ago from the one southbound rte1.  I
    compared prices and most were the same he was a little lower around
    $100 for the roll.

    replacement parts for the popular brands of outboard motors?

     Try Ward marine inWinthrop, ma. their # is in here someplace. I
    ordered a tilt motor for my outdrive 4:00 on a Wed afternnon and it
    arrived  before noon the next day.
    
     After market parts for those low HP motors is not all that common, as
    they seem to change all the time. I know the waterpumps/parts are
    available aftermarket for some of the larger HP motors and the
    outdrives.

    Nope, as far as I know there are no mail order places like you're 
    looking for.
    
    You don't need mail order though. Go to your nearest NAPA auto parts
    store.  Not many people know that they have a 300 page marine parts
    catalog.  There are 5 different impellers listed for a Merc 20 - you 
    gotta have the serial number to get the right one (one of the reasons 
    I *hate* Merc's).  They also have gaskets, fuel system and ignition 
    parts, seals, bearings, you name it.  I buy mostly OMC stuff, and 
    prices are typically about 1/2 to 2/3 the dealer price.
    
    Tell the NAPA guy to look in catalog MSP-2, "Marine Engine System 
    Parts".  Merc stuff starts on page 35 (my memory's not that good -
    the catalog is on my desk).

Marc, you seem to have hit the length (59 inches) pretty close to what appears
to be the smallest available.  Any reason why you want something smaller than
59 inches?  According to the catalogs, the 59-60 inch skis will handle a kid up
to 110 lbs.  Looking at the Bart's catalog, the O'Brien "Prodigy" combos are 58
inches.  Ski Limited lists them at 60 inches.  I guess they're around 59 inches.
:-)  Bart's has them for $114.98, Ski Limited for $123.00 (US$, of course).
Obviously you could use the slalom from the combos as your "monoski" and still
have the pair if you need them.  The "junior" slalom skis seem to be right
around 60 inches: 59" for the Connelly "Croozer" [$109.95 from Ski Limited] and
60" for O'Brien's "Bandit" [$119.95 also from Ski Limited].

Finally, we decided to use the slalom from the combos as you recommend it. We've 
tried a 59' ski but it's too long for her and she had difficulties to get it out of the 
water at start time.

Once she will master this ski, we'll try the 59' one again.

appear to be some strong opinions elsewhere in this notesfile
