583.0. "Value of Vintage Canoe?" by DEMING::GULDNER () Tue Jan 09 1990 09:39

I am hoping that a reader could help me establish an approximate value
for a vintage (1935) Old Town canoe. Any hint of how to go about
selling this to get best value would be appreciated. I figure it has
collector value but thus far I haven't reached the right "market".

The boat itself is 16 ft. with origional canvas. The two cane seats
covers are shot and there an approximate two foot section near one of
the gunwals where the canvas has slightly separated. One of the
gunwales is also rubbed. Other that that, it's in good shape.

Any idea of what to ask for the boat and how to go about selling it?

    Thanks for your time

    Hi Ed.

Your canoe is not a rare animal, quite a few can still be found in
various conditions. Being that it is not in original Mint condition do
not expect to command an enoromus sum of cash from it. I would think
that you could proberly get $100 or so from the right person however.

To find a the right market you may want to advertize it in "Messing
Around in Boats" Wenham Ma., C.O.Bob Hicks, or put it in the RiverRat
    notes file.

An original Old Town. Ash Rib Canvas covered canoe in Bristol/ Mint
condition.Brass Model tag & all can fetch between $1,500 and $2,000.

     Good luck. Walt

I was talking with another canoeist late night about your canoe. He
seems to feel that if you invested about $500 to have it recovered and
if it was Bristol in every other fasion it could fetch $1800 to $2000
    in the right market.

New cane seats will run you about $100.

    Hope this helps?

He also figured you could get a couple hundred in its present
condition. Hard to say without seeing it?
