581.0. "THUNDERCRAFT info/experience/opinions" by REGENT::BENDEL () Mon Jan 08 1990 15:55

    I'm currently looking into buying a 16' runabout, and have been
    looking at some Thundercraft models. I'm interested in hearing
    opinions/experiences about Thundercraft boats. My main concern is
    the hull design, it's strength, and the type of glass used in the
    layup. Are these boats as strong as most ? Do they handle up to
    snuff ? I've also looked at Ebbtide, Starcraft and others, and the
    Thundercraft appears to be a good buy for the money.

    		Is it ??

581.2THUNDERCRAFT "Thumbs Up"POLAR::MONTEITHThu Jan 18 1990 16:3116
    I have owned 1 THUNDERCRAFT, a 15-16 ft WILDCAT II. I had a 80 Merc on
    the boat and was extremely pleased with the performance. The boat was
    new when I purchased it in 84 (sold it in 86) and saw the boat last summer,
    it looked great..no stress cracks in the transom area, seats stationary,
    and all parts in their proper place. It was a metal-flake finish, which
    was smooth and difficult to mark up. A good friend of mine has a 1980 24
    foot THUNDERCRAFT, it too has aged well. Good hull design (out of the
    hole quick for a bigger boat, and smooth once over). Both of these
    boats were built in the early to mid 80's, unfortunatly in the boating
    industry, quality changes rapidly so I cannot speak for the quality
    today. However, my previous experience with these boats has been good.
    Hope this information helps....

    Aloha

581.3THUNDERCRAFT ??POLAR::MONTEITHMon Jan 22 1990 15:506
    I was informed this weekend that the THUNDERCRAFT name is used in the
    U.S. and in Canada. Two totally different boat builders. The boats
    I mentioned in the previous note were made by the Canadian builder, I
    cannot speak for the U.S. boats that go by the same name. Good luck.

581.4Ask Bayside Marine about THUNDERCRAFTNUTMEG::LYNNSun Mar 25 1990 20:466
    Steve, I don't own a THUNDERCRAFT, but did shop at the Bayside Marine
    in Westport Mass where they carry Thundercraft plus a few more brands.
    If you're anywhere that "south" [below Fall River/New Bedford] please
    stop in or call them. They are really nice people there.

581.5I bought one !REGENT::BENDELMon Mar 26 1990 11:2410
    Well, I bought a Thundercraft 1620, the outboard version of the 1660
    (you won't find a brochure on a 1620). It's homw now, and it looks
    great. It has my older 65 Merc engine for this year anyway, and I just
    ordered a carb. fuel line. As soon as that's in, I hitting the water
    to see how this boat feels ! I'll put some more info here after I try
    it, in case anyone looks for Thundercraft input in the future.

    I bought a Thundercraft 15 ft bow rider. It has a 50 hp Force outboard
    on it and a "power prop". Runs like a scared rabbit. Good control.
    Cheap finishings. The bracket for the bimini top is plastic painted
    chrome and broke off. The boat is sound but who drives a 15 ft boat
    that hard. I've seen better.
581.7so far, so goodREGENT::BENDELWed Aug 22 1990 15:4616
    I've used mine all summer now, nd am happy with it. It seems to
    handle well, and has taken some pretty hard wakes feeling solid.
    I haven't used my top since the spring, but it seems OK.
    	The only problems I've had were that the dealer didn't wire
    my gauges correctly so they didn't work. Also, I'm running an old
    (72-73) 65 hp Merc, and it wouldn't run correctly at wide open
    throttle, it would seem to starve for fuel. It wasn't a vent problem,
    but was resolved when I replaced the dealer installed 3/8 inch fuel
    line with 5/16 inch line.
    	The only thing that seems kinda cheap is the dashboard where the
    steering wheel is mounted. This seems like it could have been made
    sturdier, but as long as I'm not hanging on it it's alright.
    	I'm happy with the boat (don't expect the cooler to hold ice long),
    but it hasn't been long enough to swear by it yet.I'm anxious to see
    how it feels with a new 90 hp, but motors aren't cheap. Maybe next
    year.

    I may be buying a 15-16' 1985 Thundercraft Maxum bowrider, powered
    by a 1979 75hp Johnson outboard. It was repainted two years ago due
    to sun fading the finish. It has also been serviced professionally
    every season. I have not seen it yet.

    Assuming the boat looks good and everything works would anyone care
    to offer what they feel is an appropriate selling price range? An
    older 1972 trailer is included.

    Are there still Thundercraft owners out there? Any recent comments
    out these boats would be helpful.

    Thanks, Mark
