| If you're not in a great hurry, perhaps you'd like to join the list of
people in note 547. We're preparing a volume purchase of marine
equipment, with "best price" as the main goal. Of course, you could
probably do better (price-wise) if you bought used. FYI.

556.2 | Check this place out | NRADM::WILSON | A man's place is on his boat | Tue Nov 14 1989 12:40 | 17 |

There's a marina out in Winchendon that has a small barn out
back (collapsing roof and all) that is full of old OMC outboards.
I can't remember the name of the place, since I was only there
once about 2 years ago. To get there, take Route 2 to 140
north. When you get into Winchendon you'll come to a stop sign
on 140 where you'll have to go either left or right. I forget
the route number, but there will be a car dealer directly in
front of you. Go right at the stop sign, and the place is a
ways down on the right.
The time I went there I needed a lower end housing for a 1961
Evinrude 40. Another dealer said it would be over $200 *if*
it were still available. I got one at this place with the
gears for $20.

556.3 | Used Parts for Outdrives | SMVDV1::JGUNNERSON | JLG | Tue Nov 14 1989 12:47 | 8 |
| I am looking for a similiar place for outdrives, specifically Mercruiser.
My model 888 outdrive is severely damaged and the insurance is only
going to cover 50% of the cost of the parts. I can either add $1800 to
the insurance settlement to obtain new parts or I can find a source of
used parts that cost half of new list price and get it repaired for
amount of the settlement. I don't have $1800, that isn't an option.

556.4 | Another possible source! | WJOUSM::MILLS | Intriguing | Tue Nov 14 1989 14:49 | 12 |
| Another potential is to try calling Charles Whitney Service Center in
Leominster, Mass. The phone number is 534-8172. I was looking for
some part for a '72 Johnson and he had what I needed, although I didn't
end up picking it up. I understand he has quite a selection of old
used motors at his shop. The address is 65 Wachusett St. Leominster.
If he has what you need, send me a note or call and I'll try to give
you directions.
Phone is DTN 282-1393
Good luck,

| Thanks for your help.
For your information I found a place called Auto Electric Warehouse
in Merrimack NH that rebuilt the starter for $25. When I dropped
it off I talked to the owner for about 15 minutes and he seems to
know alot about starters and he rebuilds marine starters all the
time. I'm sure the price may vary depending on the starter but he
told me that if anything was seriously wrong he would call before
he did any work.
If anyone has any questions call me at dtn 381-0484

Re .6
Rebuilding would have been my suggestion- usually used electrical
parts disappear first and tend to be of questionalble reliability.
Most auto electric repair shops handle small starters fro outboards and
such.

556.8 | WHITNEY'S, A GOOD PLACE | PECOCK::GRUHN | | Wed Dec 06 1989 12:40 | 13 |
| My vote goes for Whitney in Leominster also. He helped me restore a
1958 35HP Johnson that someone else had been using for a parts motor.
His barns are just loaded with stuff from the prehistory of outboards.
I understand that during the slow season he makes the rounds of dealers
all over New England and buys most anything he can get his hands on to
disassemble and store the good pieces. Prices are very low on most
everything. Starter motors are among the more expensive parts going
for about $50.00 when I was there a year and a half ago. Carbs about
$10, Cylinder heads $10 on up depending on size and age etc. He is
very easy to get along with also but not prone to excessive talk. He
will tell you what you need to know without prodding. I like him.
